Upgrade to FX 8350 or go Z97 with 4670K?

Okay, so my situation is, I fancy an upgrade, but I dont want it to cost too much.
Ive got Sabertooth 990fx with a 1055t @ 3.5GHz but it isnt getting over 60fps in newer games now. So I could just go straight to an 8350 for £130, but everywhere I look, people say that will either be a massive improvement or it wont be one at all. I really dont know what to beleive with it.

Ive been looking at the latest i5's though, and they are going for around £30 more, but Id have to buy a completely new motherboard, of which you cant get nearly as many features on an Intel mobo at the same price as the AMD boards.
Although, I have seen the Asus Z97-A for £105 which looks quite good, but Im open to suggestions for better ones.

So yeah, thats my issue at the moment.
    Any takes on this?

My take is your upgrade won't give much if any improvement in newer games. If your current graphics card isn't good enough then changing the CPU doesn't help!

I forgot to mention, Ive got a 7870 XT, so that isnt really the problem.
Im not getting full GPU usage out of it though because Im CPU bound in most games.
(And plus, the R9 290 is still a bit too costly )

Unless you're desperate to spend the money, I really don't think the jump is worth it.

a 7870 is going to limit you in anything I'd describe as new, it certainly isn't going to gaurantee you 60fps no matter what cpu you have.

I'd agree with the new GPU over new CPU too. I upgraded my HD6990 to this GTX780Ti and it has made a massive difference in terms of frame rates and smooth delivery of those frames, my games now play a lot better than they did before.

what res are you gaming at

    what psu do you have?

    whats your ram and speed?

and the 8350 will happily spank the 1055 in the latest games - I know as in my house we have both or very similar)

Re: Upgrade to FX 8350 or go Z97 with 4670K?

The FX CPUs are now starting to show some decent improvements over the Phenom II X6.

Someone over on OcUK did a comparison:

    http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/sho...php?t=18604818

Also,I would get an FX8320 and sell your old Phenom II X6,which should mean a cheap upgrade,

Re: Upgrade to FX 8350 or go Z97 with 4670K?

Sorry for not replying in a while, Ive been moving back from uni and only just got set up again
As much as people are advising the 83x0, I think Im going to go for the Intel offering...
Turns out theres a £30 cash-back deal in place for the exact processor/ mobo combo I want, so with selling my current parts, I could make the switch for ~£120.
And Im making my parents a full PC, so I might as well make a day of it

But thanks for all the input everyone

Re: Upgrade to FX 8350 or go Z97 with 4670K?

Heres my 2 cents , Instead of going for both 8350 or i5 just go for the fx 6300? , This way you are able to save some money and get a 6 core cpu which is enough for games these days as most only use 4 cores . The extra cash can get you an upgrade of gpu which will give you an improvement on the frames.

Re: Upgrade to FX 8350 or go Z97 with 4670K?

I'm sure you will be happy with the Intel route, good luck.

As an aside, when someone clearly has the budget for an 8350, why do people recommend something cheaper? I mean, the 8350 is quite frankly compared to the Intel offerings a bit of a bargain. Had mine a year, still very happy with it. Now when I made the choice I worked out that the best CPU for my needs was the FX6350. I wanted the clock speed, but I really don't need the full 8 cores. But when it came to clicking the buy button, I figured that I would always have a nagging doubt that the system would have been a bit faster if I had paid that bit more for the top speed 8 core.

If I was buying today? Probably go the same route. The 9000 series is a bit of a reach, the motherboard I have doesn't officially support it and the extra money doesn't seem worth the performance bump. At that cost I would probably go Intel.

if you upgrade your gpu will be holding you back maybe go for an 8350 and a gpu upgrade?

    Why not?

Especially if you overclock the thing.

    Or cheap route eBay/Cex

Also you mentioned the HD 7870 XT, I am assuming you mean the Tahiti version? That card has juice for 1080P.

Even then it was basically a binned 7950 with a couple of units masked off, performance was between the 7870 and 7950 so about the same as the new R9 270x
Not a slouch but not bleeding edge ether.

I think the bigger question is what games? "newer games" could be almost anything. It'll depend on the game as to if cpu or gpu is going to be the bigger factor.
