I used it in a dual boot system with XP. Vista after SP1 was perfectly fine especially on a reasonable desktop like what I have, and I tweaked it too. To this day I am not sure why people have to keep on egging on Vista -its almost like they dug themselves into hole about it.

The worst thing is that Windows 7 is basically late model Vista with better memory management, improved SSD support, better out of the box optimisation, other tweaks like less intrusive UAC and a couple of years hardware advancements, and vendor driver improvements. A lot of initial problems with Vista was since MS moved to a new driver model, which people like Nvidia did not follow to a tee, which caused problems, and that fact that many Intel IGPs were subpar for the OS anyway. The recommended minimum spec for Vista was too low.

When I moved over to Windows 7,it was an improvement, but honestly it was not as magical as people were saying.

Good job you didn't say something positive about Windows ME, that *really* gets people's backs up

I'd second (fourth?) the SSD. I'm looking to add 2 to my machine in a few weekends time. One for Steam, the other for the OS.

As for the fan getting clogged with dust, a good dust filter on the case and/or opting for a hybrid water cooler can make all the difference.

Re: Do computer components slow down with time?

Going back to the original question, I don't know if hardware "slows down" but I do now that when I have my overclocked Q6600 after about a year I had to increase the voltage to keep the overclock stable.

Re: Do computer components slow down with time?

I had personally Win XP till Win 7, seeing Vista only on machines I was "servicing". All the improvements you mentioned in Vista vs 7 could alone contribute to the "magicality" in the 7. Will miss out Win 8 to take up Win 9 when it comes out.
