Just checking futuremark for any changes in the 3d mark tables, a new entry 14th in the table, is an Athlon 64 at only 2ghz!
So athlon64 to take over as ultimate gaming cpu soon?

yeas, a very uber gaming cpu. also note that intel has evil plans (read about TCPA) and basicly want to destroy all things good with the help of microsoft. so.. amd it is for the next 10 years
It's always good to go with the underdog.
Gives good competiton and you always pay less for a better product (sometimes).
Acer Travelmate 8104WMLi
P-M 2.0 Ghz
2Gb DDR533 Corsair RAM
100Gb 7200rpm Seagtae HD
128Mb ATi x700 Mobility
What is listed on the future mark tables isnt always 100% accurate.
anyone got a link for these tables as i cba to go looking around they're site right now
i read an article on the amd64 beating a 4.1ghz, so i wasnt suprised at this thread.
Why are people so impressed, its a next generation cpu and it "justs" beats a highly overclocked p4. "wow" wait until intel release there new offering then be impressed.....
intels next offering won't be nearly as impressive, as iirc they're sticking with the same architechture
because it runs at half the clock speed?Originally posted by Ethos

even running two lots of 32-bit (so effectively running at 4Ghz, presuming that the emulation is 100% efficient, which it won't be), getting anywhere near that performance is a massive achievement, imo.
I wouldn't go too far on AMD 64, but it does look as though it will keep slightly better pace with the P4s than the poor old athlon xps, which can surely only be a good thing.
I was presuming it would *still* do some stuff in 64 bit by translating it as two lots of 32 bit...if this isn't the case (and it's running in what I'd call a "pure" 32 bit mode) then I think AMD have carte blanche with their marketing - because that is bloody brilliant perf.Originally posted by Agent
Its also only running on a 32bit version of windows, and 32bit drivers, with 32bit software....
Yeah, it's not like "Itanic" is going to be competing in the home 64bit arena any time soon.Originally posted by Knoxville

I think this time it's AMD's big move with the 64bit, whereas Intel's last trick was HT tech and I think all they can do with that now is die-shrink and speed scale (possibly another FSB bump maybe..) from looking at their roadmap.

64bit windows isn't due out until well into next year iirc, but then again Athlon64 isn't going to be available in any great quantities until then anyway is it?

As far as i understand it, 32bit software will only use the 32bit registers of the CPU, and not the full 64bit. I know that any software not compiled for 64bit wont take full advantage of it - but i dont know if 32bit software will have some benifit or not. Im not entirely up on 64bit at the moment im afraid.Originally posted by Byatt

There is other OS's which have a 64bit version released - namly linux
Yeah, as much as I love linux, it's still pretty much a niché market and not something AMD is going to rely on to flog to harry homeowner any time soon.Originally posted by Agent
