    I5 4690k general questions

I'm planning to include this processor in my build, and just have some general questions

    1. Is the stock fan enough if I'm not going to do any over clocking but will run demanding games

    2. Is there any need for thermal paste when I start overclocking on this processor as Intel states they have some sort heart dispersion material on there already

    Question 2 breaks question 1.

Either you are planning to OC or not lol.

    Re: I5 4690k general questions

If you plan to OC it in the near future then get an after market cooler, at the minute stick with the stock cooler if you are not overclocking
    Case:Coolermaster HAF X 942 - Motherboard:AsRock z68 Extreme4 Gen3
    CPU:i5 2500k @ 4.8 ghz - Cooler:Corsair H100
    GFX:MSI GTX 780 Lightning LE 3gb - RAM:8 gig Corsair Vengeance 1600MHZ
    OS: Win7

    Re: I5 4690k general questions

At stock, the standard heatsink is absolutely adequate, even for gaming - in a lot of games, it's more likely that you'll be bottlenecked by a stock graphics card than a stock processor. Ditto the thermal paste already attached to the heatsink. Intel aren't going to ship their shiny processors with a heatsink that doesn't stop overheating.

Of course, an aftermarket cooler (and there are many - read lots of reviews before diving in) will generally let your processor run cooler and quieter at stock, or at the same level of noise/heat as the stock cooler allows at stock settings. They tend to come with their own thermal paste, or you can buy high-performance paste (and there are many - read lots of reviews before diving in).

What cooler will be best for you depends on what case you're using. Most exhaust out the back, some exhaust out the roof, and a few don't bother with exhaust fans (these are the ones to avoid, normally).

Unless you are in a typically very hot country, stock will be fine. If you change your mind, then right now the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO balances cost and efficiency of air cooling well atm.
