Building a new pc in a week

    Hey everyone,
I'm so glad to find a website like this so that I can get some help/ideas about the setup I'm gonna build. This is going to be a gaming pc with a single screen.

    Cpu: Intel Core i7 4790 Soket 1150 3.6GHz 8MB Cache 22nm (382$)

Cpu cooler: THERMALTAKE NIC C4 (75$)

    MoBo: GIGABYTE Z97X-Gaming 3 Intel Z97 Socket 1150 DDR3 3200MHz (O.C) (220$)

    Gpu: MSI R9 290X GAMING 4G GDDR5 4GB 512Bit MD Radeon DX11.2 (676$)

    Ram: 8GB Hyperx Fury DDR3 1866MHz CL10 (120$)

    Case+Power: cooler master haf 912 midT/80plus Bronze 750w (250$)

    Screen: AOC 23" i2369v led ips (227$)

DRW: ASUS DRW-24F1ST 24X DOUBLE LAYER SATA (28$)

    Hd: WD 3.5" 1TB Caviar Blue SATA 3.0 7200Rpm 64MB Cache (70$)

    Keyboard: Razer Deathstalker Expert (90$)

Mouse: Razer Naga (for mmo) (100$)
    Roccat Kova+ (for fps) (90$)

    Mouse Pad: Roccat Taito (36$)

    OS: windows 8.1 (90$)

    Total: 2451$

I'm thinking of buying another 8 gb ram to make it 2x8 and ssd later. Maybe a bluray reader aswell. I can't afford the ssd at the moment. But its okay I can re-install the windows on it.
So what do you think? Is there anything that I need to change/upgrade/downgrade ?

The cpu was i7 4770k before but I don't think I will ever oc it so I might buy i7 4970. The price of both cpu's is same.

Thanks Domestic_Ginger, I added the price tags and edited the names of the products.

    Welcome!

Post what its for and people can share their ideas and experiences.

Posting prices and budget will get people to put some input as they can offer alternatives.

You'll need a PSU and if that is a vanilla 290 it is going to be loud. Not sure a z97 is compatible with a 4770. If going ivybridge check out 2nd hand. OS? 8gb is plenty for most things. A128gb ssd is £50 and well worth it. I would get Get one in the initial build.

Re: Building a new pc in a week

It seems like a decent list of components, although Im not sure you'd need 16Gb of RAM? I would personally budget for an SSD from the outset, given the rest of your specification. I assume you'll be playing games, given the high-end graphics card you've selected? Having recently experienced the map load times for Battlefield 4 using both a hard-disk & an SSD, for that game at least, I think an SSD is pretty much essential

Given that NVidia are releasing their GTX 970 & 980 GPUs in the next few weeks, it might be worth holding off your purchase? Even if you're not interested in an NVidia card, it's possible that AMD will cut the price of their top-tier cards after NVidia's launch...

    Edit!
    -----

I'd also go for the 4790K rather than the 4770K, given there's only a small difference in price.

Re: Building a new pc in a week

If the pc is for gaming I wouldn't go for i7 at all.
i5-4690k is a really good processor for a lot less money.

Re: Building a new pc in a week

If gaming PC with a single fullHD screen then drop the i7, save some money for better cooling(AiO water cooler) or GPU.
Also feel free to sacrifice the mouse pad plus 8GB of nonessential RAM plus one of the two mices and you pretty much have money for a 480-512GB SSD (which can easily have your OS, programs and games).

Suggested ones are Crucial MX100, M500 or Samsung EVO.

Re: Building a new pc in a week

    Thanks Bonebreaker777,
The fact is I already have the gaming gear from my previous pc. But you're right. If I didn't have them the best would be dropping them and buying a ssd. But I don't think water cooler is a must for intel cpu's since they don't overheat as much as amd cpu's.
I'm thinking of buying a g-skill 2x4 ram instead of single 8 gb kingston.

If you do go with the 1TB drive then think about partitions. If you plan to get a 250GB SSD in 6 months then partition that drive (when installing windows) to 250GB (or 230GB after formatting in windows) and then I know the Samsung SSD's come with software that allows you to copy the entire drive contents over. Negating the fact of installing a fresh windows.

Re: Building a new pc in a week

I would reduce the cost of the CPU by getting something cheaper, like an i5 as suggested above, and use the saved money for a small SSD to run your OS & programs. I use a 256GB SSD and have it set to only 200GB to help with longevity and TRIM to maintain better performance throughout its life. I've used a 100GB SSD before without much trouble, just don't have any storage on it.

Other than that, everything looks good. I would suggest looking at the screen I got (Dell UltraSharp U2412M - $252 from Amazon), it does well with ghosting tests despite its 8ms response and has excellent colour reproduction (http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2412m.htm) and general quality package that Dell are known for (at least for their monitors).

Thank you all for the suggestions. I'm going to add 120gb ssd for now.

Re: Building a new pc in a week

I'd echo the advice given to go for a high-end i5 and save money. They really are very good processors and at the top end there's no need for an i7.

I use a Samsung EVO 120 SSD. I haven't used the Samsung software to migrate data. I just backed up important data and started with a fresh OS install, then copied back.

The Samsung EVO's will smash any mechanical hard drive for speed, but you could spend a few quid more and get the Samsung Pro.

I rate G.Skill RAM. I've had maybe four kits and they've always worked with whatever motherboard I've put them in.

You say you were originally going to use a single stick of Kingston? I wouldn't build a gaming machine with single-channel RAM, you should always buy a two stick matched pair so that it works in Dual Channel mode. If you use one stick you're limiting your RAM bandwidth. If you use a matched pair the CPU can read/write data at twice the bandwidth. Just plug the pair into the same colour sockets on your motherboard and it will automatically work at double the bandwidth.

Re: Building a new pc in a week

In terms of gaming it makes little difference having 2x4 or 1x8 to be honest.
In fact I would prefer to have 1x8, so that I could get another 1x8 in the future to put alongside it. But I don't really like kingston, it must be said.

Re: Building a new pc in a week

If the OP's going to save money building an i5 system rather than an i7 one they're gonna want most efficient performance on the CPU end. I don't see the point in bottlenecking the system by only using half the bandwidth it's capable of, especially if using a speedy SSD. Plus, there may be compatibility issues in buying 1 stick now and another stick a few weeks down the line. Better off buying a matched kit now or risk searching for a stick of the exact same model number on eBay.

Thank you guys for your help. I bought the pc. I will keep that samsung ssd in my mind. That driver installing thing can become handy. G-skill rams are really common here so I don't think it will be hard to find a matching one in the future.
