Im putting together a spec for worst case scenario in case i run our of cash. So im looking at the XP processors as i heard a 2500 can oc to 3200. But ive noticed alot of places no longer stock 2500 and ive seen some sempron, any good?

Semprons aren't crap by any means, they are usually good overclockers as far as I know.
However you can still get bartons: CPU City
The 2500+ processor there is a mobile version and are supposed to be excellent overclockers.
Can the mobile version go straight into the same mobos as the Socket A ?
It should be going in a Shuttle Sk43G
Semprons are gr8 value for money...
So i should look into the mobile cpus instead?

Im looking just for great value bang for buck, so i'd rather not spend more for just a couple fps
The Socket A range are essentially Athlon XP Thoroughbreds, from what I’ve read. So they are good.
Be Aware that there are two types of XP Mobile chips, Socket A and another type whose pin array name escapes me, but these ones aren't socket A - they were designed for another socket type.
XP Ms are allegedly coming multiplier locked (if you believe what they say on the net!), but i bought one very recently and it wasn't locked. I have managed a clock of 209x11 1.625v (2300Mhz) cooled on air. It runs way way way cooler than my XP 2000 which was clocked to 2.1Ghz - Temps for comparison:
XP 2000 - Clocked to 2.1Ghz - Idle 40 Load 50
XP 2500 M - Clocked to 2.3Ghz (without breaking a sweat) Idle 36 load 44
There's a little more headroom for a further overclock here, but i reckon the limit is nearing at about 2.4Ghz (physical limitations of the chip design)
Cooling is a volcano 12, turned down to acceptable noise levels). Called a volcano cos it sounds like one erupting at max chat....
mobo Abit NF7-S v2.00.
Afaik Semprons are higher clocked Thoroughbreds, they lack on L2 Cache and will most likely be locked. Go for the legendary 2500 Mobile.
Semprons are identical to the Thoroughbred cpu on the socket-A platform. The only diffrence is there is a socket 754 version, which is a athlon64 without 64 bit capability.
The Main diffrence is the adjustment of the RP ratings to reflect their preformance to Intels celeron line of processors.
The Semprons are intended very much for the budget end of the market, but as the socket 754 3100+ sempron shows there is a bargain to had.
Overclocking wise the socket A versions are the same core as Thoroughbreds so they should overclock to about the same levels.

Hope this helps
Is overclocking in an SK43G a wise thing?
