Overburning.

Hi everybody!

I have seen CDs around that state capacities of 90 or 100 minutes. I hear that is extra capacity is only achievable via overburning.

Firstly I should ask if this true. If so, are some CD-writers more likely to be able to burn these larger disks? Do any CD-writers natively support these larger capacity disks?

yes its possible, but it does put your drive at risk as some cant handle it as well as others.

Some drives explicitly support overburning, I have an Asus CRW 5224A and it burns 99 minutes CDs without any problems... But, the 99 minutes CD-Rs are so expensive that if you're wanting to burn lots of stuff over CD size, you'd probably be better off buying a DVD writer, since they're pretty cheap nowadays...

They are not that expensive anymore, I found these which are not too bad price wise. I seem to have found a couple of CR-RWs that support the larger media. If anyone knows of CD-RWs that definitely support 99 min media I would be grateful if you would let me know.

I agree that the price of DVD writers is amazingly low now.

Nothing supports it natvely - I find this is one of the things that really pull the cheap LiteOn, BenQ drives from the Plextor and Asus drives Overburning is risky although alot of writers can do it fine (my Phillips had no problems doing it).
