Sooooooooooooooooooooo - finally an update.
I ordered the Synology DS2415+ today. I am trying to find compatible memory to upgrade from the 2GB to 6GB.
I'm not paying £50+ for 4GB 'Synology' ram.
This unit gets great reviews.

I've an official 2Gb module that I pulled from my DS1815+ which I could be tempted to part with...
I'll have a look at it's specs when I get home tonight if that helps.
I bought a Kingston stick. Cost £24 from Amazon for 8GB. Ill try it and see. Someone else said they had got it working lol. I'll report back.
Also, there are 4 lan ports on the back of this diskstation. I just have an 8 port unmanaged GB switch. No link aggregation etc etc. Should I just connect it with 1 cat 6 network lead? Or would connecting with more than 1 offer any benefit?
Thank you,
Mark

there's an option for "Adaptive Load Balancing" which you can use with unmanaged switches. The performance isn't amazing, but you do get the benefit of redundant links and a bit of a performance boost.
I think I just bought a pair of 8Gb Corsair DDR3 SODIMMS for mine which worked fine - getting in to replace the stock DIMM is a massive pain in the rear, but the empty slot is reasonably easily accessible.
So should I use all four lan ports and connect to switch? I just bought one dimm and booting it now. Fingers crossed lol
Thanks for your help

yep - I think ALB doesn't support splitting across 2 switches, but you can certainly hook all 4 ports up to a dumb switch and it'll work. Just don't expect 4Gb/s throughput
Thats good to know thank you
Well - I got this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kingston-KVR...ilpage_o01_s00
I put it in the easy to reach slot at the side. Disk-station wouldn't boot until I took it out.
Unsure if trying to put it in the hard to reach motherboard slot would help.

Won't make any difference. Will check specs against what I bought when I get home, but just going I to cinema now so it'll be 3 hours at least I'm afraid.
Thats no problem. The specs of the stick I got look fine. But who knows what the problem is!

If it helps the kit I put into my DS1815+ was this one and it works a treat.
Well interestingly, I took out the 2GB stick attached straight to the motherboard (fidley!) and it now works. I only have 8GB (better than 2GB which is ridiculous for a station at this pricepoint) rather than 10GB but I am sure I could get another 8GB stick in the future if needed.

you've installed v6 of DSM, right? If not then it's a 32 bit OS anyways
Yes, I installed DSM v6. I have never used any other version as this is the first Synology product I have owned. Creating an SHR volume takes ages though . . . .

Using plain R10 and R5 here (R5 in the DX513 as a backup target), but from what I understand SHR is something like R5 so a long build/rebuild time is to be expected.
