Is it safe to...
...remove the fan from my Northbridge and just leave it with the heatsink only? It is a stock fan and very loud, when it is off my PC is very nearly absolutely silent. It currently sits between 40-45 C constant. If it isn't safe what would you recommend to cool it? (nForce II Ultra 400).

well you could replace it with one of those really decent Northbridge heatsinks but you need to remember that there is a fan on the northbridge for a reason

I would not advise running the nforce northbridge without a cooler as they get really hot, and then stability issues pop up once this occurs. You can change it and a lot of people fit either vantec, swiftec, or thermalright cooling solutions to replace the sometimes noisier "stock" northbridge fans.

Well it wont burn up, but I have no idea how efficient/useful the heatsink is on the NB.
My MSI nforce2 has no fan but does have a small heatsink that has a bit of surface area (lots of fins). Gets a bit warm to touch but I couldnt care less as its stable and its my server.
