PC is too loud, giz a hand

My PC is toooo loud. I can hear it downstairs when the PC is upstairs idling and it's no good for using at night when others are in bed. So can anyone recommend some new kit so I'm not constantly shouting "STFU" at my PC?

- My specs are: AMD 64 3500 S939 (Newcastle), MSI K8V Neo2 Platinum, 2x512mb Corsair XMS Pro, Cooler Master Centurion CAC-T02. All using stock coolers (HSF and case fans). The case can only take 80mm fans at the most AFAIK.
- I'm not looking to overclock so quiet components are prefered over things that are good for overclocking
- I've got an Artic Cooling cooler for my 6800GT, should I fit that?

On another note, when fitting a floppy drive temporarily for my mum I broke the cover/bezel thing and I'm not having a biege floppy drive sitting in the middle of my all black rig, any suggestions for what to put there instead like fan controllers, cup holders, card readers etc?

Whats your PSU like then? Most of the noise on my comp comes from my PSU.

You could try sound proofing it, and fit bigger, slower turing fans where you can. These should quieten down the lil beastie!

Ah, I have a CWT, they are just like Antecs, but mine doesnt make as much noise as what you are describing.

It could be your PSU, one way to check is just to listen up close to all the different fans, and see whats making all the noise. Then replace the noisy fans.

Or you could get something to control the speed of your fans, something like this

My cwt is a great psu but far too noisy. Damn expensive silent ones

It does sound as if your problem is the psu. If you can only use 80mm case fans thats not a problem get some panalflo/papst fans- quiet and theyl shift the air

The hard drive can be noisy with it spinning around and also the vibrations they make. Try putting eubber around the screws

also get one of dem zalman heatsinks for the cpu that has 120mm and can be maxxed out with 20dba, i think

The case can only take 80mm fans at the most AFAIK.

I would recommend changing your 80mm fans for some SilenX fans, preferably the 14db fans.

Don't stand your PC on the floor. I had a problem with noise tansmission through a floor and fixed it by standing my PC on a cushion. I hope it is this simple for you. Otherwise identify what makes the most noise and replace the offending items until it is acceptable.

i'd probably go with a good Fan Controller, or maybe even just taking fans out, if you aren't going to overclock stuff then you dont need such elaborate cooling, you could probably quite happily go with just a PSU and HSF

It's already off the floor, it's in one of those computer holders that hangs under the desk. I removed the door though so there was enough airflow for it.

I think I'm going to get a couple of SilenX fans and a CNPS7000B-Alcu heatsink.

You could build a low spec PC for night use. Something like a Celeron D with small PSU and 512K memory. As for floppy drive, buy a new black one for less than £5.
