Mobo failed - new build required

Hello,

My PC just switched off the other day, and wont switch on. I have narrowed it down to the 12V ATX plug (that powers the CPU). When I plug this into the mobo, the PC starts for 2 seconds and then shuts down. Everything I have read suggests this is a mobo failure.

I built my current PC in Feb 2008, so 6.5 years is not too bad out of that setup. In Feb 2008 I built

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4 iP35 Socket 775
4GB DDR-2 RAM
Gigabyte GTX 460 OC 1GB (this was added in August 2011)

So I am looking for a new mobo, CPU and RAM only. My budget is about £300.

I am not interested in overclocking, and I am only a casual gamer (about 5 hours a week) currently playing Bioshock Infinite.

I am hoping to keep the existing graphics card, PSU 750W, HDDs and ATX size case.

Any recommendations appreciated.

How does this look:

Corsair Desktop Memory 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600 MHz

My PSU is a 750W made by OCZ, model number ZS750W. Its only 2 years old.

I will check the output s at the ATX 12V terminals with my multimeter and see what they give.

That psu should be fine, the ZS is a very solid unit, a bit overkill on the power, you could of easily used the 550w model.

The parts you listed look fine.

As for where to get them, ebuyer is still ok, however there's a GIANT caveat, it's called Yodel, which is who they currently use for deliveries and because of yodel and their frankly terrible track record, has lost a lot of customers.

I'll still happily use scan, however amazon seems to have gained a lot of traction atm

You need to test them under some load with an oscilloscope to get a good idea, multimeter won't really cut it.

If you can find another PSU to try, that could be easier and better.

The way you describe the problem - i.e. starts for a couple of seconds then dies, sounds much like the issue I had with my new build. I also had the issue that it wouldn't do that two second starting burp again until I'd switched off the PSU and allowed its charge to dissipate. Although I thought it was the board at first the issue was the PSU, which was a Corsair CS750X - a solid piece of kit normally. I verified it by finding an old PSU with ATX power plugs and booting the mobo with it, showing the board to be fine. When taken back on RSA, Scan reported it as dead on arrival - so, don't rule out the PSU just yet!

I'd clear the CMOS and then try it, you might get lucky.

Thanks for the replies. I 'bread boarded' the PC this evening. I checked all voltages of the PSU, and they are fine.

Then I realised that the mobo and PSU will remain powered with the CPU removed, but not when the CPU is installed. Could this really be a failed CPU?

I might buy a cheapo second had socket 775 CPU as a little experiment.

Honestly clear the CMOS, I had two issues not long ago with power supplies and motherboards and it fixed it both times.


The first was a machine that booted with one psu but not another, clearing the cmos made it boot with both (weird right?)
The second was a psu that kept supplying the motherboard and fans, gpu e.t.c with power after the pc shut down, clearing cmos fixed that also.
It really is worth a try

I have already tried clearing the CMOS by removal of the battery and shorting the CMOS reset pins. I ordered a socket 775 CPU from eBay for the grand total of £3.99. I will report back once I have tried a different CPU.
