Computer doesn't seem to post
Here are the components:
FX-6300
GA-990fx-ud5 (it has a very old bios on it I believe)
2x2gb crucial ram
HD 6850
128gb crucial mx1000
600w coolermaster psu
Basically when I turn the computer on the all the fans spin on the computer (cpu, gfx, case, psu etc) but the monitor says no signal. I am 100% sure the monitor is fine and the dvi-d cable i am using is fine also. I don't think the computer is posting because I am getting no error beeps from the motherboard speaker that i plugged in. I assume no beeps = no post.
My belief is that the error is related to the fact that I have a piledriver cpu and I have a REV 1 of the UD5 so the bios is not up to date. Is this how the computer would behave in such a scenario?
- I have tried one stick of ram and different ram slots. The ram worked fine in a different computer the other day so I don't think it is the ram.
- The cpu is brand new so I don't think it is that.
- The psu is old but has not been stressed that much so I don't think it is that.
- The gfx card is old but has never not worked before.
- The monitor has never not worked either and lcd monitors are usually pretty hardy.
My suspicion is the motherboard is broken/shorting or the cpu is incompatible without a bios update.
Any suggestions as to how I can work out what the problem is? I am going to try removing the battery from the motherboard now to see if that helps and I will report back.
Thanks in advance guys! :-)
Re: Computer doesn't seem to post
have you got an athlonII or phenomII you can put into it? that way you could check the possibility of an out of date bios and up date it.
Make sure the motherboard speaker is plugged in the right way round.
Re: Computer doesn't seem to post
I had an old sempron and phenom 2. Can't find either of them. I have tried the mobo speaker both ways just to check but i know I have it the right way really.
Is the way my computer is behaving now how a computer would behave with a compatible but too newer CPU?
Re: Computer doesn't seem to post
Assuming its GA-990FXA-UD5 (I can't see a 990FX) 6300 is compatible with the first release bios. Its got a dual bios, so try the second one, but also check your connections, particularly if you're using extension cables. I recently spent about 3 hours trying to diagnose a lack of posting due to not connecting the EPS12V connections. Felt pretty dumb.
Re: Computer doesn't seem to post
Yeah i was using an extender cable because my case is so big. I rerouted The cables to rule that out. Same problems.
With regard to the bios it is not so clear. My motherboard has the F2 BIOS. The fx-6300 needs the f10 bios or later. Now with just the F2 bios would it at least post or just act as if there is no cpu present which is pretty much what it seems to be doing now.
I'll see if I can get the other bios to work. Good suggestion!
Also I have found a guy selling a sempron 145. So if I get my hands on that at a sensible price I can see if it is bios or not.
Re: Computer doesn't seem to post
I had the same thing when my GPU died. Try taking it out and see if it will post then.
Re: Computer doesn't seem to post
Just bought a second hand sempron for a tenner. I will keep you guys posted. It will be interesting to know whether the bios is the problem or not!
