Disappointing but not entirely unexpected as they generally do this to get people to migrate. I've been itching to upgrade my PC for a while but I think now I'll probably just save up and build a new one from scratch - although I am hesitant to leave the familiar comfort of Windows 7
I've only recently started using Win 8 on the PCs at work and, while it does take some getting used to, it seems to work quite well - except for the daft sidebar thing I keep bringing up by accident when I move the mouse to that side of the screen. I'm looking forward to see what they do with Windows 10.
As far as I can tell Windows 10 looks more like Windows 7 than it does 8/8.1 but now you can add metro tiles to the start menu. I'm planning on doing my PC up to dual boot so I can have both 8.1 and 10 on it to try it, but I have briefly seen the preview in action and I like what I have seen.
Which is exactly what I was expecting. Microsoft are not in the business of making people happy, they are there to squeeze every penny out of us that they can.
I have 4 machines in the house that the family use to game on, so assuming £70 for an oem Windows license that is £280 before you add in the hardware upgrades needed to buy the license. What does that get me, 10% improvement? I can think of so many better ways to use that sort of money.
Another thought occurs as well. Apple are in the business of selling music and hardware. Google are in the business of selling adverts and content. They can both afford to give this technology away in the OpenGL form (or amusingly maybe even Mantle) to try and gain market share, and mobile devices are already outstripping PCs in sales. The latest Nvidia and Apple ARM chips pack enough graphics power to make use of it, the budget chips will follow soon enough.
I'm not really surprised, ms did the same thing with dx10, they had a very good and popular os in xp, which they had to support for far longer than they wanted to, so they used dx10 as a hook to try to get people off xp.

How big a deal is DX12 for casual users?
Windows 7 is by far the most popular Microsoft operating system. Would game companies be motivated enough to produce games for Windows 10 OS only?
Apparently, it's seems the AMD person may have "misspoke" http://www.gamespot.com/articles/amd.../1100-6423617/ .
Microsoft should be in the business of making people happy if they wish to retain their customers for the long term.
My prediction is about 6 months after Windows 10 has launched nobody will have bought a copy and we get Windows 9.1, thats windows 7 with DX12.1 and will require a graphics card upgrade. Nvidia will not have a DX12.1 card ready and will spazz out and drop DX12.1 support, then Microsoft will announce Windows 11 with DX12.2 and drop support for windows 10 and 9.1.

It's more what it does for the devs than what it does for the gamers. DX10 was a problem because rather than reducing workload, the lack of XP support meant almost everyone carried on with DX9 game engines - only just now is this beginning to change.
DX12 could be the same, or, if AMDs claims are true, maybe devs will play with mantle and then do the short work to put out a DX12 version for nvidia users or something.
DX10 wasn't that revolutionary because it was still DX9.0c at it's core, DX11 pushed it out a step more but there's still not many bits of software written solely for DX11 or DX10, the majority are still DX9.0c with some extra graphical shines dropped on top.
Hardware tessellation especially has so much potential for dynamic polygon count to make a really efficient game engine, but it only ever gets dumped on a few in game asserts in a fixed way to make them look prettier.

With W7 losing Microsoft support soon, is it any wonder they are not bothering to code the backwards compatibility for a newer version of DX?
Nothing like forcing people over I suppose
