    USB 2.0 via pcmcia

    My bro in law has just got an external cd/dvd rw that supports usb 2.0, but he only has usb 1.0 consequently its taking ages to a CD. If I get him a pcmcia-usb2 adaptor card will it work at reasonable speed, or is the pcmcia speed going to cripple it? The device is self powered so wont draw power from the laptop.

    Cheers

    The ones I've seen work well, no slowdown noticeable. Is the laptop old? And is it running WindowsXP with SP1?

    This has raised a question that I have never asked myself: how fast is the PCMCIA interface?
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    It'll depend if the PCMCIA slots are cardbus, though at less than two years old they should be. If they're not you may be limited to the 100mbps throughput of the pcmcia slot rather than the full 480mbps of USB2. Still it should be a huge improvement over USB1.1

    Cardbus PCMCIA is as fast as the normal PCI bus (not PCI-E or X), and USB2 operates across the PCI bus anyway on pretty much all PCs.
