    Upgrade for Gaming Rig

    Hi All,

I hope you are well, its been a fair while since I was last on the forum. I would like to upgrade my rig so that I can play the new Call of Duty Game - Advanced Warfare on my PC.

I recently went through the hassle of installing win7 64 onto my pc just to play the game!!

I am not sure how well my rig specs up compared to you guys but i generally just use it for browsing these days as I have been studying for exams and didn't have the time to play on it!

I think the biggest area for me to make gains would be the graphics card. I think the rest of the specs are fine. Given that I have a 27inch screen i wanted to know which graphics card would be best to play at full resolution and i dont mine making a window within my screen as I understand there will be lag if i were to play on full screen. I would like to spend less than £200 ideally but i just want a card that will play the game smoothly on medium settings as I just want it for the game play

I have heard the NVidia would be better for my rig than ATi? I am not sure what the numbers mean on the cards anymore as i have stopped building computers ever since i left student life

    Thanks, Vincent

it looks as if depending on your system a Geforce GTX 750 Ti would be about the minimum you could get away with:

    http://www.overclock.net/t/1522671/g...rfare-gpu-test

It seems to be coming in around the £100 mark but hopefully the link should give you a starting point.

    Re: Upgrade for Gaming Rig

R7 260X 2GB handles it really well (full HD,some settings high, some medium, maximum allowed overclock on the GPU core & memory, most driver settings are "application controlled").

    £83 for a 260X 2GB or £105 for a 270 2GB.

    260X matches 750Ti performance, 270 beats 750Ti.

Most cards allow maximum overclock in a reasonably ventilated case without overheating or throttling so that is an extra 10% performance for free (at least the last 3x AMD cards allowed it for me,all XFX).

I was thinking about getting the GTX 780 TI. would that be overkill for my requirements? I was thinking that it would be amazing to play on a full 27" screen for once. I cant believe that my GFX card is so out of date!

    Re: Upgrade for Gaming Rig

Didn't you said you don't want to spend more that £200? The absolute cheapest 780Ti starts over £290...but other wise for medium settings on fullHD overkill (could easily set the details higher).

    Re: Upgrade for Gaming Rig

ok, thats true, I did say <£200 I didnt realise that GFX cards were so expensive!

I think this one would be ok for my purposes? I am not an avid gamer but I want something tha twill allow me to play some of the future games... I dont really know how to read the specs so was just going on the ratings on the link that kind man in the 2nd post sent.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Palit-GeForc...ywords=gtx+770

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/GeForce-Dire...ywords=gtx+770

from the above list, which one is best value for money? The 4gb, I assuming is > than 2gb?

Unless someone wants to recommend another one for me

The cooling look ssufficient also which is good

It's not the size of the screen which is important, rather the resolution. I assume your 27" screen is 1080p? (high definition).

If you're looking at an NVidia GPU for your system, on your budget it might be worth waiting for the GTX 960, which will no doubt be released early next year.

Hi Thank for the reply. I am hoping to run at full resolution of 2560*1600 on 27inch. I thie card [http://www.amazon.co.uk/GeForce-Dire...r_product_top] or [http://www.amazon.co.uk/Palit-GeForc...words=gtx+770] seems to rank pretty well on the overclocker analysis.

Does it matter if its ASUS or PALIT? I saw that many more people bought the ASUS and the rating was generally better!

I want something to do over christmas so am looking to buy this week. I am not really on a budget but I am not looking to spend 300+ on a card!

how long do you think it will take for this card to become outdated? hoepfully it will be able to handle the next CoD? :S

Many thanks for the help guys!

That's a strange resolution for a 27" monitor - it's not 2560x1440 is it? Either way, at that resolution you might be better off with an AMD 290 or 290X (not the stock version), or an NVidia GTX 970. The latter can be had for about £260, maybe less if you shop around at the moment The 970 will give you good image quality settings & reasonable framerates, & should be good for a while into the future.

    Re: Upgrade for Gaming Rig

Regarding Asus or Palit, I guess it'll come down to price & features. According to the Sticky, the Asus warranty is a year longer:

    http://forums.hexus.net/graphics-car...ally-look.html

I'm not sure how up to date that is though. These days some manufacturers deal with warranties entirely through the retailers.

Personally I've always liked Asus cards, they've been built very solidly & have been very reliable too. I've not had any direct experience with Palit...

    http://www.scan.co.uk/shop/computer-...0-(1664-cores)

are all the cards on this link effectively the same card? Its annoying when there are too many choices!!

I have a 600w PSU ... assuming this is enough power? my setup is in the system section of the profile..

    OK have decided:
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/4gb-a...res-1x-dp-1x-d
    or
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/4gb-e...664-cores-1xdp

I dont know which way to goooo!!

    Thanks Jim for your help.

Ok I think I have decided to go with ASUS as the fans don't turn on unless the temp is above 60*C whch is useful as I have made a lot of effort to make my PC silent!

are all the cards on this link effectively the same card? Its annoying when there are too many choices!!

I have a 600w PSU ... assuming this is enough power? my setup is in the system section of the profile..

    OK have decided:
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/4gb-a...res-1x-dp-1x-d
    or
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/4gb-e...664-cores-1xdp

I dont know which way to goooo!!

    Thanks Jim for your help.
The link you gave is for GTX 970's, but they vary depending on base GPU frequency, boost frequency, & memory frequency.

Yep, your 600W PSU should be fine, as long as it has the required power cables (you can get adapters even if it doesn't, or some might come with your card).

The Asus card is a nice one, but at the upper end of the 970 price scale. You should get a free game though, which you could Ebay if you don't want to redeem it yourself

Mr Jim, again, I thank you very much for the time you have given to help a brother out.

I just bought the Asus GTX970
