Returning parts of a wholly bought laptop?
Hi
Quick story: PC World/Currys had cash back offer on certain laptops during autumn so I upgraded the "wife's" machine.
Came with a SSHD. Wasn't fast enough. Replaced with a SSD and kept the SSHD for myself. Last couple of weeks the SSHD was making odd noises and the SMART readings were dodgy. It is dead now.Asked PC World/Currys if I can return only the non functional part so my other half don't have to stay without a machine for the time being. They said I can't. Have to be the whole laptop, potentially away for up to 28 days.
Could contact HP and reason with them. Do you guys think I got a chance?Make them accept to deal with the SSHD only without needing the whole thing?
Re: Returning parts of a wholly bought laptop?
see if the drive shows as in warranty and RMA direct ?
Re: Returning parts of a wholly bought laptop?
As I understand it the Warranty is on the laptop so they would need the whole thing back to deal with a warranty issue. If you can get through to HPs second line support staff you might stand a chance, I doubt their first line would be equipped to handle an issue that falls outside of their normal 'scripted' procedures such as, "have you tried switching it off and on again".

I think this is your only option, pop on to the website and you can normally find out by typing in the serial. If its not then you have no choice but to go via PC world :(
Re: Returning parts of a wholly bought laptop?
Always worth checking direct but if it's seagate I wouldn't hold too much hope, I find they normally show as OEM warranty only.
Re: Returning parts of a wholly bought laptop?
It is a Seagate (SSHD what else.Toshiba is just licking the market and WD is just pure poop with they SSHDs).
Will try the SSHD serial number directly.
Also I contacted HP. Still waiting for a response.
Re: Returning parts of a wholly bought laptop?
Seagate says no. Was sold as part of a system, contact the system manufacturer.
Still waiting for HP to come back to me.
Re: Returning parts of a wholly bought laptop?
HP will probably say "you opened it? warranty voided!"
Re: Returning parts of a wholly bought laptop?
Nope because nowhere in the manual says it and nothing underneath the laptop said it.
Re: Returning parts of a wholly bought laptop?
for the price of a hard drive just buy another ..

It is a SSHD. And no,thank you. I return the whole laptop before I have to buy a "new". I paid for a new this summer.
Re: Returning parts of a wholly bought laptop?
I doubt HP will be much help. Your contract is with the retailer, not the manufacturer.
The sale of goods act places the liability for faulty goods firmly on the supplier.
Some manufacturers may optionally offer additional cover, but while you are waiting for HP, you might just as well get it back to PCW and get the repair under way,

Well, HP proven me right (again) as a provider of fantastic customer support. I contacted them again. Told them what happened. Initial reply was "go to PCW". I told them about my conundrum. The agent "chatting" with me went away for few minutes to explore other options. Came back, told me to execute a "HP disk check". Resulted in a "Error ID". Typed it in, the agent asked me for my contact details and currently I am awaiting an advance replacement for the faulty SSHD with the package to post it back to them :)

Great news - and shows it is worth persevering. Really pleased it worked out, and redeems HP in my eyes as they have had a lot of stick lately!
So a Happy Christmas to you!
