    Unhappy DVDROM Shattering Disks

    Hi guys

just had a major problem been playing a CD in my DVD RomDrive while looking around the web few sites etc. and the bloody disk shattered trashing the drive.

well now i am back online after that problem and looking for a new drive asap.
Just a DVD Rom only drive already have cdrw. looks like two possibles Pioneer 120 16x or a Liteon 16x
i see the pioneer 120 has a ultra dma 66 interface will this make any difference to the speed of the drive seeing as the max burst is only 21600k
also the buffer is only 256k where the liteon`s is 2 meg
i also had a few problems playing back DVD`s on my old LG 16x model, it was not a duel layer or dirty lens or DMA issue in win98 ME just a lot of pausing.
i have been using power dvd 4 all latest patch`s.
i have also read on one of the forums that the pioneer drives have duel laser don`t know if this is the case on the rom only drive may be the combo drives.

any experience on these issues would be a great help.

I'd definitely rec LiteOn. Can't rem now precisely but IIRC they offer everything you need (or near as damn it) including ripping at full speed and multi-regioning. Great drives, FYI JLMS actually manufacture them for LiteOn.

One way to prevent the chance of cd explosions is to reduce the speed of the drive by using a utility such as Ahead's Nero DriveSpeed.

and the winner is... Ozymandias. Spot on.

Keep drive speeds to 45ish or less, and no disks should explode. 16xdvd drives tend to do 48x cd, so just knock it down a notch with Drivespeed...

Sickens me that a company like Aopen would fob you off with "Well its cheap, expect it to blow up and possibly injure you or your family"

thanks lads i will be getting the liteon this weekend its got the extra ripping speed. can`t see much use for the pioneer 120 ultra dma 66 interface, unless it`s to do with the master / slave issues on the IDE.
