    £500 Amd system

    Hi chaps,
A friend of mine has asked me to build him a system for £500 based around an Amd 64 3000+ Sckt 754.

I haven't used Amd for a while so i'm not too sure which components are best.

If any one has any suggestions that would be great. He just wants a base system; case, psu, cpu, mobo, ram, gfx card, sound on motherboard is acceptable but not essential.

I personally would spend more on the cpu and gfx than the rest but thats me.

The Cpu was only a guide so i'm not sure if he could do better than that.

Ok i'm all ears and thanks in advance.

    First question is:

What does he need the system for?

Without knowing, we can't possibly offer you any suggestions on things like CPU and GPU power, RAM speed, HDD size, etc.

Slightly over your budget (£529), but a nice pc all round and based on socket 939
(You'll be doing your mate a favor by avoiding Socket 754 really)

    Ebuyer.com
FLOPPY Sony OEM 3.5 Floppy Drive £4.23
    DVDRW Samsung TS-H552B 16x Double Layer DVD R/RW - OEM £37.55
    HD Western Digital Caviar SE 80GB SATA150 7200rpm 8mb £42.28

FANS Ebuyer Value 8cm Case Fan With Blue LED's £1.19 each 2 Qty needed so £2.36
CASE Ebuyer Value KME 5260 Midi Tower Case Aluminium Front plus side window 400w PSU £32.89
POWER LEAD Ebuyer AC Power Lead (Kettle Type) Suitable for ATX PSU £1.17
IDE to SATA converter Adaptec Ack-sata Power Cable Serial Ata Power Cable 8 15pin To 4pin £3.59

    VIDEO PNY Verto GeForce 6 6600GT AGP8x 128MB GDDR3 (G66600GABF12YPB) Retail Box £149.98

    Shipping band £5.99
    Surcharge £0.00
    Total from Ebuyer.com £281.11

    Komplett.co.uk
    MB MSI K8N NEO2 Platinum-54G Mainboard S939 nForce3 250Ultra,SATA,GbLAN,ATX,Dual-DDR £91.00
    MEM TwinMOS PC3200 DDR-DIMM 512MB CL2.5 Memory184-P (for DDR-PC400MHz) £46.00
    CPU AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 1.8 GHz Socket 939, 512KB cache, BOXED £106.00

    £5 delivery charge
    Total from Komplett.co.uk £248.00

    Grand total of £529.00

Can anyone improve on that, as i'd like to know if it can be made cheaper myself

If you still want to go the socket 754 route then change the motherboard for this one from komplett

    EPoX EP-8KDA3J Mainboard for Socket 754 nForce3 250GB,SATA,GbLAN,ATX,Sound £55.00
    http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=300671&cks=PRL

    And this CPU
    AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 2.0 GHz Socket 754, 512 KB cache, BOXED £102.00
    http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=300492&cks=PRL

So then the total becomes £499.00 (But socket 754 isnt so future proof)
