New rig or upgrade?
Hello there, how is everyone doing?
I'm currently in the midst of pondering the new stage of my pc journey and there are a few options open to me which I'm considering and would appreciate opinion and insight!
At the moment this is my build:
AMD APU A10 6800K Black Edition 4.4GHz
Gigabyte GA-F2A85XN-WIFI
Kingston Hyper X 16GB 2400MHz DDR3
MSI GTX 760 2GB GDDR5
which is housed inside a BitFenix Prodigy Mini-ITX case.
Now this has been a relatively good performing kit, and I can play the majority of games fine however i'm beginning to find new releases - Witcher, Dragon Age ect to struggle, with consistent fps drops to 15-20.
With FallOut 4 in the horizon, and the advent of 4K gaming - it seems like the perfect opportunity to do some upgrading. The question is, what precisely.
I've got roughly 800-1000 available to spend and there are a few options in mind.
A, maintain the board & cpu and upgrade the gpu - buy a 980 Ti
B, new board - go for a 1150 mobo with a 4970K and a 970
or C, go for a 2011-v3 mobo with a 5820k and a 970
Each have different price points of course, however with where I'm 'umming and ahing' is whether it's worth going for a 1150 socket or potentially future proofing my mobo with a 2011-v3 socket...
That being said, do I NEED to upgrade my whole rig for better game performance?
Thanks guys!!

Another option is the Intel i5 4690 + 980 Ti

Re: New rig or upgrade?
Try it and see. There's nothing stopping you buying the card first and then upgrading the CPU if it's too much of a limiting factor.
Given you've already got the memory I'd probably go for an LGA1150 i5 or i7, 2011-3 requires DDR4 so it's more extra than if you're buying from scratch.
I'd certainly go for a top of the range card if you want to buy a 3840x2160 monitor. I'd probably go AMD for adaptive sync as it seems likely to be better supported in future but I would expect G-Sync to get a reasonable amount of support (at least 5 years).

Re: New rig or upgrade?
Agree, keeping DDR3 is just fine and going for socket 1150 or 2011 should be the way. Would say i7 in socket 1150 would be a nice comprise. Over clock it and you should be fine for a couple of years (especially with DX12).

Re: New rig or upgrade?
I would upgrade the card, the rest of your setup you have is fine as long as the power supply is decent enough and has the required wattage and amps on the 12+ rail(s).

Re: New rig or upgrade?
Hah, I misread the nVidia 760 for a 960(!). In that case GPU upgrade before the MB + CPU. Definitely.
Knowing the PSU (model + power, etc) would help too with advising. Whether you need a new PSU or your existing one would be just fine.

Re: New rig or upgrade?
If you got £1000 for now I'd say you could prob push a skylake i5
Go board for 200quid ish
DDR4 - 8GB Vengence 3000mhz 58quid
I5 6600 for 200 quid
Rest for new gfx card get a 980 card or other bits as needed
With 1000 to play with just go major component upgrades and go more future proof
Or if you need rendering powers then go for 2011 rig
