Hi i have got a 40GB HDD which if full (only 10MB left). And i have a GA7ZXE mobo with i think teh VIA 133 chipset. Is there a way to put another 40Gb HDD on there without instaliing windows or anything. And so that windows recognizes it as 80GB hdd. I have 1CDRW, 1CDROM and 1HDD so i think there should be a spare IDE cable left. (2X2). Sadly the mobo dosen't have raid ! Urgent replies needed
you can't run a JBOD setup like that without raid I'm afraid.
nothing to stop you adding another hard drive and having a seperate letter for it though.

If you've got XP Pro and are using NTFS you can set a mount point so Windows will see your other drive as a subfolder of the main drive. If you wanted to reformat/reinstall you could create a spanned volume across the two drives using the Drive Management tools in Windows.

My advice would be bang another drive in and just copy some data over to it (not program files though as that'll knacker the registry, unless you reinstall them.)

nope, you wouldnt need to install windows, just make sure you put the drive on slave setting, and format it to NTFS if on XP/2000, or FAT32 if you're on 98
Most moetherboards support a maximum of 4 IDE devices - 2 per channel. This can be any combination of Hard drives and CD/DVD drives you like, but no more than 4.
So if you put your other 40Gb in, you'll have used up all your channels and can't use the 10Gb in there.

its only spins 5400RPM, is that bad ? and was manufactured in 99

there should be a little diagram on the top/bottom of the drive which shows the position to put the jumper.

5400 RPM is fine, thats was the standard speed up to the last couple of years. 7200 RPM is now the norm.

Done, all installed cheers rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbishrubbishry, kez, moby and Zatras. Now only problem is the hdd itself is split into two platforms, how do i put them into 1
As has been said mate, you can't put them into one drive (unless you get them running as "Dynamic Drives" but that is a bad thing) you will have to do with them being split.
naa i think u misunderstood, i meant there is a partiton in the hdd that i just installed, how do i delete that partition ?
Windows Disk Manager will solve that one - just don't go deleting the partition with all your data on!
