Do any USB 3.0 Bridges Exist? (PC to PC Transfer)

I previously used Gigabit Ethernet to transfer videos I was recording on 1 PC to another PC. I couldn't get Windows built-in PC to PC transfer to work so I used Dukto. That was fine however if you've got heavy CPU usage by doing video encoding or something at the same time of doing the transfer then for some reason it slows down the transfer speed to 1/4 of what it normally is. My CPU usage was well below 100%.

So I used a USB 2.0 Bridge instead. It works perfectly but is half the speed of Dukto (when Dukto was working at peak transfer speed). The bridge does NOT suffer from the same bug as ethernet transfer with Dukto.

So I was wondering if there are any USB 3.0 Bridges anywhere. None seem to exist. Why is that when it's faster than Gigabit Ethernet?

Not sure why you would be having issues transferring videos via network in windows, when you say the "built-in pc to pc transfer" what are you talking about?

It would be easier to just use windows explorer and connect to the other computer, you should then be able to see the computer utilising as much of the speed in the network as is possible, if not limited by a switch or router then this would be the full 1Gb so most up to 100MB/s if nothing else is using the network.

"built-in pc to pc transfer" = If was referring to network transfer in Windows. i.e Windows has a function that allows you to transfer from one PC to another via ethernet. I couldn't get it working.

Do you have any step by step instructions for setting up Windows network transfer or the Windows explorer method you suggested please?

Windows transfer, when both PCs are connected to the same router, normally just comes down to windows user accounts and enabling a share or shares.

Make sure both PCs have the same user (with the same password) and then right-click a folder you want the other PC to access and go to the sharing tab and enable sharing.

To make things easier, enable network discovery on both PCs as well.


Although a USB 3.0 option would actually be quite nice, it is 5 times faster then Gigabit Ethernet :)

I cant say ive ever come across someone trying to transfer direct via usb between two computers, but apparently they do, I always find gigabit is normally enough.

Also if they dont have the same passwords etc, you can connect via the network name and C$ share, as you can then just authenticate using the computers actual account.

Guys I need step by step instructions please. I've tried doing it myself and following an online guide with instructions and it didn't work.

Apologies, having problems creating a guide...

If you open windows explorer.
Then in the address bar, where it would normally say c: or whichever folder you are in, enter \\computername\c$ or D$ whichever drive you need to access.
If you have shares enabled then just \\computername will work, alternatively you can use \\ipaddress as if ipv6 is not working your machine will probably not be able to resolve the name using your routers dns.

It will prompt for login this will need to be in the form computername\username and then the password for the computer.

Alternatively if you enable sharing on both computers from within network and sharing centre and then share the folder using the properties menu ensuring that "everyone" has full control then you will not need to authenticate.

Hopefully this makes sense, ill try to see if i can get something with pictures!

Video transfers no ones mentioned Firewire! Is it defunct nowadays?

pretty sure firewire went the way of the dodo... i could be wrong though

That's a USB 2.0 transfer cable. I've already got one of those.

Has to be worth getting networking going. I'm sure we can help...

If you browse the network on one machine, can you see the other?

On the command line, can you use "ping" to get a response from the other machine? eg, if your other machine is called "foo" what do you get if you type:

ping foo

If you go to the Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Network and Sharing Center on both machines, do they say they are joined in a Homegroup?

A slightly higher latency (but still potentially faster than USB2) option is to copy the files onto a USB 3 drive. Move your arm as quickly as you can and plug it into the other computer and copy them off it ;)

(Inspired by high bandwidth transfers of lorries loaded with hard drives - which my company actually did something similar to during a server move once :p)

Nope but you can do network transfers or use programs like goodsync which is a good one.
