What Do You Use To Clean Keyboards

    Hi,

I received a laptop recently where lets just say the keys have seen better days. I dont mean between the keys or underneath but the actually surface of them is quite dirty. Normally I would use some type of household cleaner, ie Mr Muscle or something but it always leaves a sticky residue.

So, what do you use to clean dirty keyboards?

For laptops, rubbing alcohol and paper towels. Everything else, dish soap and hot water (with the keys removed).

Re: What Do You Use To Clean Keyboards

Agreed, best bet is probably just going for the rubbing alcohol for the surface, compressed air for underneath. Want something that cleans without leaving much residue and will dry quickly so you dont have to sit and wait for it to dry up before switching it on. Was very impressed with the alcohol when I used some for replacing my CPU cooler recently, have used it on a few other bits and bobs since then.

Yes I was thinking of getting the isopropyl alcolhol which I believe is the right thing. And cloths, lint free, microfibre?

windolene, IPA spray for grease marks.

tbh any 2nd hand laptop should be easy enough to replace said keyboard via fleabay for under £20

god knows what it would show under a UV light

Yes the laptop probably isn't as bad as a lot I have seen but enough to make me want to clean every last key! Probably looks worse as its a white keyboard

I used lint free cloth, the amazon store I bought it from by the name of "Shinyhardware" (also have a website) sells bottles including a few cloths. I ended up buying 500ml including 3 cloths but they also offer 250ml bottle with cloths, I can provide a link if you're interested in theirs but the cloths arent usually hard to come across anyway.

I will check them out mate. Its just mainly getting something without leaving a residue and something that isn't leaving bits all over the place.

Re: What Do You Use To Clean Keyboards

Hey Peter, is that Marlins or Maplins?

Didn't think of handkerchief, everywhere seems to be microfibre this and that. I even bought a fitted sheet the other day, got home and it was microfibre, took it back and got cotton.

Actually, i use the towel half side dry, half wet (specifically keeping it for cleaning). First rinse from the wet side, then from the dry side. It cleans the whole computer set.

Re: What Do You Use To Clean Keyboards

If your feeling a bit brave I once removed the keyboard from a friends laptop and removed all the keys, gave it a bath in hot soapy water scrubbing it down with an old toothbrush and left it to dry for a week before putting it back.
It appeared to be growing stuff behind the keys so I had to take drastic measures.

Baby wipes are good for collecting dirt, they leave a residue which can be wiped off. The 'fragrance' goes after a few days.
