An extension is ok, it should work.
You may find that the extension cable can be connected to either half of the 8-pin (4+4) connector from the power supply, either half is fine, the connectors should be keyed so you can't accidently connect them the wrong way round. If you're not sure, just check yellow goes to yellow and black to black.
