Downgrading to a Sempron! Heat Question.

My 2800+ in my shuttle system gets to 55c when I'm encoding DVD's on it, since the system is only used for downloads, playing films and encoding DVD's I though I would buy a slower CPU to help reduce the heat (and noise). I'm looking at the Sempron 2200+ which looks like good value for money and I doubt I'd noticed that much of a performance difference.

Few questions though.

1: How much cooler will a Sempron 2200+ run compared to a Barton 2800+
2: Does the size difference in cache affect encoding speed?

I'm not certain you'll see much of a difference, are you able to compare the default core voltages as thats probably what'll give you a difference if there is one.

Just undervolt/ underclock the processor you have now. I find that in general if you run a processor a little below its rated speed, you can usually reduce the voltage by quite a lot- for example, I once ran a Duron 1400 at 1.6GHz (actually an overclock) at only 1.4V, which made it run just a few degrees over ambient.

Other thoughts:

Have you got the fan on temp control in the BIOS? If so you might want to reduce the trigger levels or just run the fan on a set (higher) speed.

Have you had the shuttle open recently to see if it is full of dust (especially the fins on the ICE cooler, the heatsink on the northbridge and GFX card)... Also if you're using the onboard GFX and have moved over to a passive NB cooler you might want to rethink - I've tried this with my SN41G2 and it REALLY heats up the case if I'm using the onboard GFX and no NB fan...

Atm the trigger level for fan speed up is at 48C, which is greyed out and I can't change it, anyone know how to?

My shuttle has actually been modded a bit, I'm using a passive HS for the NB but got a dedicated 9600np installed (passive as well), so NB heat isn't really and issue. I've also changed the 80mm fan to a 120mm fan which extracts more air and runs quieter.

How old is the processor- is it locked? If it's not (I.E. pre-0339) you could pin mod it to reduce the voltage and/or multiplier.

You do realise shuttles usually run at that temperature right? My shuttle was like 48 idle and 55 load. It's fine like that imo

I would also say 55oC is nothing to worry about. It's a shuttle after all. I really wouldn't worry until you are running close to 65oC

As has been said you will do much better to reduce the voltage (Assuming your shuttle has the options)
