Advice on comp upgrade

About 3 weeks ago my motherboard died on me as well as my graphics card, all probably due to my psu.

So i need a new motherboard and psu, (i ve already bought a new graphics card (sapphire radeon 9600 256mb)

I was thinking that i would need the new motherboard to last about 3 years and thought i could as well change my processor and my case and add a bit of ram.

so here is what i was thinking of buying

I will probably upgrade the whole lot in about 3 years time. I already have 2 80gb hard drives, 512 mb DDR PC2700, SB audigy 1, 1 CDRW and 1 DVD rom 16x all are in working order.

Is there anything ive misse don my shopping list or are there any incompatible components??

You should get DDR 3200 and a socket 939 mobo and CPU instead....

Thing is 939 is a wee bit more expensive and i plan to completely overhaul my PC in about 3 years and abit and I already have 512 PC2700 i didnt think i could use two different type of DDR ram at the same time.

I was wondering though would a pentium 4 with HT on 865 mobo be a better solution as it would be cheaper and i dont really do hard core gaming, but more of doing many application at the same time ( FM2005 +internet +winamp etc...)

well both systems use DDR 3200... And the P4 wont like the 2700 at all! I'm not shure how the AMD would respond...

Get one of the new winchester 3000/3200+s Socket 939 CPUs with the ASUS 939 board and the price difference is no more than £20, I think. Certainly not a large amount of money for a lot of upgradeability. I'd also recommend getting pc3200 - I'm not sure if you can bring the system clock of the newer AMD CPUs down to 166Mhz, but I know you'll lose a lot of performance if you do.

I'd push for two 512Mb sticks of pc3200 (~£100 from crucial atm) myself.

Also - there's the Tagan 480W in that PSU price range that may well be a better bet - but to be honest there's no real need for such a beefy PSU unless you're looking at upgrading that GFX card anytime soon - forseeable, a 9600 is going to be the bottleneck in that spec - you could quite easily power that system off a decently branded 350W unit.

About the ram i saw a fairly good price Kingston PC3200 (£85 for 1gb)
And go for this PSU
380W Enermax Coolergiant AX Series EG385AX-VHB(G)(SFMA) ATX PSU, 12V Version 1.3, aPFC

rather than the 400w asaka.

And if i go for the socket 939 these look fairly decent

Much beter! But I'm not a fan of that mobo... Perhaps a MSI Neo 2? Or a simular Nforce chipset mobo? Dont get me wrong either mobo will perform great but after geting my Neo 2 I couldnt even consider going Asus!

yup, get urself a socket 939 mobo with a winchester cpu, i nearly opted for socket 754
then read about why its better to go 939. the difference in price wasnt that much higher so its well worth it

I might actually look into the MSI neo 2, I found the platinum version for £88.99 on Komplett. Would i be able to get it cheaper eslwher or is that the standard price?

If you're planning on using your PC for the next 3 years, I would lean towards getting a fairly high specced rigged. I mean, get a lower specced rig now and there is no way it will last you 3 years and still be usable. Oh, and I'd strongly suggest a gig of RAM.

Yeah and PC2700 will hold your machine back. But then so will the video card. If you'd held back on that you could have got a PCI-E board which would have given you rather more future proofing.

As to the Via/NF debate - the Asus is faster at stock and more stable. The Neo is more overclockable but has some problems - both in needing more effort to set up and in a percentage of duff boards. If you want to OC and don't mind a bit of work in setting it up, then get the Neo.

That s the thing i dont think i will be trying to OC, not at the moment anway. And the KT800 seem to be cheaper generally. But then I suppose i cant really go wrong with either chip, so it ll depend which will be cheaper during january sales....

Compares K8T800 pro with nForce3 250 and SIS 775FX for socket 939.

The VIA chipset seem to have the edge but nothing very significant.
