Is the drive on its own cable? Do you have DMA enabled on it?
If you google AIDA32 and download though it will give you the specs of your HDD :)
huh? dma what is that ? there are two drives on one cable, although teh second drive is disables in bios.Quote:

What is the other device connected to the cable?
otehr device is the 5 year old maxtor 8gb hdd
EDIT: no dma setting, but tehre was atapi one so i enabled it. Now it takes ages to post
What chipset is the motherboard? Also the Maxtor will be a ATA33 hdd and slow the other drive down to its speed

one more thing, if i take my maxtor out what cour ide shall i put on my otehr drive black or grey ?

What OS are you using? And what is your motherboard? And do you also have any CD/DVDs?
Try taking the old drive out and put the seagate on black
right some development :
took the old drive out
installed the new hdd on single ide(ide-0) cable with no other drives
ide 1, has two optical drives on
i am using win xp. And i am stil geting ****ing 2.2mbps bandwidth which sucks. I can't even play a damn movie in vcd quailty. Will try to reinstall IDE drivers. I *think* it is because of the dodgy cable
Don't you have a spare cable? I've never seen an IDE cable with a red connector before. Ultra ATA is usually blue at the mobo end. Which is why I asked which mobo you have.
i have a ga-7zxe, and the mobo socket is red in colour. I do not have spare ide cable

or the 4 in 1 drivers

Definitely the 4 in 1, but get the latest. Maybe the miniport too - I can't recall.
Have you updated to the latest BIOS (FB)?
This motherboard only supports ATA-100, so you won't get full speed from modern HDs. I'm trying to work out whether you are using the right cable - is it one that came with the motherboard?
Well u see, i bought this pc from this man who built it from me 3yrs ago, so i don't really know if he used the mobo cables, but i think they are the motehrboard cables. I am really of scared of doing BIOS updates :( as i have seen ppl who had awfullll problems with doing it.
Installed the drivers, no increase in bandwidth but CPU utilisation dropped to 12% +/-2%. Miniport drievrs can be uninstalled, so i am just being patient to see if anythng else works first. I should be able to try the hdd with a new cable in the next few days.
One more thing :
Will two IDE drives(cd+HDD) on two ide cables give me MUCH MORE performance than two ide drives on one cable.
