PC thinks it has no sound... Yet it has Soundstorm!

I have a Lanparty nForceII UltraB and am having a very strange problem. I have MCE2005 installed and when i turned on the PC this morning it seemed to think it had no soundcard! No error messages, nothing, it's just like the sound doesn't exist.

    NvMixer errors with:
'The application cannot start because it could not detect NVIDIA nForce hardware on your system...'

Windows Sounds and Audio Devices Properties shows:
    'No Audio Device'

This is VERY odd. Everything else on the mobo seems to work fine, and like i say, Windows gave no errors, it's just like sound doesn't exist! Also there is no nVidia stuff in the Audio section on Device Manager any more.

NOTHING has been changed in the system since it last worked.

I had the same problem several days ago, reformatted the HDD and reinstalled... nothing. So i swapped the HDD for the old 10gig test drive i have, and it worked. But now it's not working on the 10gig drive...

    I am VERY confused.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Similar problem recently when I updated to the latest build of the nVidia standalone audio drivers. Removed nvMixer, removed the audio devices from Device Manager, rebooted, let the system redetect the hardware, manually selected the drivers, rebooted after letting all devices install, audio worked again. nvMixer still doesn't, but I reckon that's because the latest drivers are out of sync with it.

The latest NForce sound drivers are definitely naff. Go back to an earlier set.

thats what happened to my K7N2G - ILSR, nothing out of the on-board sound, i thought it was dead so i put a pci one in instead.

have the latest n-Force drivers installed.

will try the older ones again to see if that sorts out.

    will report back
