    Crucial Ballistix

I was originally looking at some OCZ Platinums (3200)... They would set me back 205 (or around there). Now then me looks at some Crucial Ballistix and me thinks... Timings are close, but £50+ less... Will the Ballistix be close and as good for oc'ing?

    I will likely run it on MSI K8N Neo2 Plat, with a Winnie 3200+, ASUS 128MB 6800GT...

I would not go crucial ballistix its poor value for money they seem to have poor testing when they speed bin them. Its potluck if you get 2 good DDR`s that are any good.
Just out of interest and for a guide, price V`s Value i have two sticks of very old the (bogstandard stuff) crucial the cas 3 , 3 , 3, 6 pc3200 it will do cas 2.5, 2,2,6 at a FSB 240 or the default above at FSB 250. they were about £40.00 a stick when i got them about £50.00 at today price. Is it worth paying double for the Ballistix.
If you are looking to OC your winnie you will want to take it to the MAX!! if so you don`t want to be held back by your ram. In which case you really need to get the best out there.
You really want to get some G.skill pc4400 or any other pc4400 memory. But only with Samung TCCD chips.

Model# F1-3200DSU2-1GBLE (must be the LE option)
    Manufacturer: G.skill
    Speed: DDR550(PC4400)
    Type: 184-Pin DDR SDRAM
    Error Checking: Non-ECC
    Registered/Unbuffered: Unbuffered
    Cas Latency: 2.5-3-3-7
    Support Voltage: 2.65~2.85 V
    Bandwidth: 4.4GB/s
    Organization: two 64M x 64-Bit
    Warranty: Lifetime

you are looking at the £200.00 a gig but it is the best speedbin ram out there at this time lot of money but you should get 18 months + out of it with what ever AMD64 or AMD Motherboard you get until AMD go DDR 2 or DDR 3.

Hmmm... This is true, but cost is also an issue... I have already added £100 to my graphics budget, and don't really want to do the same to my RAM budget... What about some Corsair XMS3200XL Platinum TwinX (1GB) - to go inbetween the 150 and 200 mark?

Bad advice from shamus. Firstly there's no benefit to PC4400 as LL PC3200 will run the same timings at the higher speed, or tighter timings at slower speeds. And you pay more money for the 4400.

I don't understand his point on his crucial - what do you expect from £40 RAM?

I don't know about Crucial's testing. I know lots of people who've had to return memory from other makers too (OCZ and Corsair included), so this may be a general problem - I wouldn't be surprised if none of them bother (they probably found 90% work anyway, so it's cheaper to replace 10% than test the lot). But with Crucial you can deal direct and everyone agrees that their support is superb.

    Hi Thorsson
In the case of the pc4400 ram if you are buying memory to day you want to future proof has much possible and if your into overclocking you want highest FSB with the lowest latency timings. If you want to save money then you have to cut back on one of the two.

Yes Crucial have the best RMA going and yes there are no saints in the memory game they are all out to make money but G.skill are the new kid on the block so they are doing the best to impress, which means you should get some good Dimms in the short term.

Well I can't see myself buying 512 Mb DDR again. Hopefully they'll fix 1Gb DDR by the time I next want to upgrade (or have moved on to DDR3).

Just my 2 cent but I have a positive feeling for Crucial Ballistix, I got a Newcastle 3000+ with a stick of Ballistix 512M module. Running at HTT 245 vDimm 2.8 timing 2-2-2-5 no prob, i know the htt is not impressive but the mobo is not AGP locked and i don't want to fry my vid.
