Socket 940 - Stick with it or jump ship?

I've been having a discussion with some work colleagues as to my choice of processor. Originally I had an FX51 I was allowed to 'evaluate' for work. Then, unfortunately there was a company audit, so it had to go back & I was running a spare Opteron 246 before buying an Opteron 150 off fleabay.

I personally love my rig as it is. It's fast, stable & manages to handle anything I throw at it, but I'm beginning to wonder when the end of the road for Socket 940 is? I know it's primarily a server chip, but to my mind it makes a damned good PC chip too. So, come time to upgrade, do I go S939, or stick with it....IF Opterons have moved on by that time. (Also begs the question whether they'll be PCI-E compatible too).

S940 isn't going to die any time soon. For a start, the first dual core chips will show up on S940. For a second, plenty of people NEED to use registered/ECC memory for data integrity reasons.

Since you can use any K8 chipset with any K8 socket (due to the Hypertransport link being a standard) there's no reason why S940 won't keep up to date with the latest chipset developments.

How about a Dual Opteron SLI monstah from Tyan?

I dont know about you but i have just read up on the specs of the new DFI LanPartyUT SLi nF4 board - I think i have found my next motherboard.

I terms of will socket 940 die, defo not BUT i dont think you will see SLi mobos for it anytime soon as the FX55 is now 939 as well so 1st tier manufactures are not going to see it as a big market. I think you will see nF4 boards though.

Well SLi doesn't really worry me tbh. I doubt whether I'll be able to afford the extravegance of 2 high end vid cards.

One benefit of sticking with socket 940, is that you should be able to use a dual core chip when they become available, after a bios update of course.

Yeah, dual core chips open a whole new bag of opportunities and questions.
