Athlon XP 1800+ 266FSB

What would happen if I stuck an Athlon 2500+ Barton (333FSB) onto it - would it just run at a reduced 266FSB, or simply refuse to work at all?

What would happen if I stuck an Athlon 2500+ Barton (333FSB) onto it - would it just run at a reduced 266FSB, or simply refuse to work at all?
Initially it will probably default to fail safe settings as an unrecognized cpu.
If it lets you set it up manually you will then be able to run at 11x (assuming multi locked) 133 which is slower than your 1800+.
It looks as though it will boot with, but you may have some fun getting it to the right operating frequency.

Thanks guys...I'm considering an Athlon XP 2600+ but it seems they come in 3 flavours according to the AMD website:
1 variant with a 266fsb, and 2 variations with 333fsb. Guess I'd be lucky to find one of the 266fsb chips for sale these days.
Hmm alternatively would a Mobile Athlon XP fit this motherboard? I don't have experience of these cpus...

Mobile Athlons are the same socket i.e. Socket A. However, I don't know whether the motherboard would work with it alright. My motherboard doesn't recognise the type (since I haven't flashed the BIOS), but it still works fine.Originally Posted by cptwhite_uk

Just a quick update on this : I've sourced myself an Athlon XP 2400+ (266fsb x15 = 2Ghz)
Just looking through the motherboard manual and noticed it only has jumper settings for upto 12.5x Multiplier.
Is it likely this is an absolute maximum for the multiplier or is it possible a Bios update might make this adjustable within the CMOS settings.
Anyone any thoughts on this?

Hmmm the mystery deepens! This page reckons it's possible! Hopefully it's just the BIOS version that counts and not the revision number of the PCB itself, the table would suggest that....
