Have I messed up? 204pin DDR3l on standard mobo

Hey all,

I just recently ordered all the bits for a new build.

Asus H170M-E D3 board with an I3 Skylake 6100 processor.

So I had 16gb of DDR3 coming, then quickly found out Skylake only supports DDR3L because 1.5v ram can damage it.

So my motherboard said it supported DDR3 /L ram, I quickly cancelled the DDR3 and ordered some Hyper X DDR3L 8gb kit.

I've just got the motherboard in the case. And I went to fit the ram. And I hadn't thought anything of it being half the size of normal DDR3. I assumed as mobo said supported it would just clip in.

But it doesn't look like it will. Am I right in saying this 204pin SODIMM kit won't fit at all? Does full size pins DDR3L exist?

It's got me so down and confused about the build. All excited putting it together and now I can't and I'm out of money and going to have to reorder I think?

Could anyone just put my mind at ease about it all and confirm what I need to do now. Recommended replacement ram that will work would be appreciated.

You need 'full-size' 240-Pin DDR3L 1.35V DIMMs. They certainly exist but there are not as common as regular DDR3 1.5V DIMMs.

204-Pin SODIMMs won't fit, 1.35V or not.

At least cemented my anxiety in disappointment rather than uncertainty.

Good thing I didn't get impatient and try pushing them in.

If someone could point me in the direction of a kit that would work with my mobo and processor id be extremely grateful.

Return your current RAM under Consumer Contract Regulations (what used to be Distance Selling Regulations).

Throwing a spanner in the works. After having a quick poke around, it seems like the H170M-E D3 is one of the boards that ASUS have managed to get 1.5V DDR3 working.

My current RAM came from Amazon. It's also been opened. Do the distance selling regulations still apply?

That ram at scan looks the job though. Can see how I came up against a problem searching for DDR3L they all seem to be labelled different.

1.35v DDR3 would've lead me in the right direction.

Luck of the draw, they don't have to refund as it's not been returned in condition that is resellable.

It's not uncommon to run ram at higher voltages when overclocking it, a few years ago virtually all higher speed DDR3 needed 1.65V to run, so I don't think 1.5V would necessarily be a problem unless Intel are being awkward with non-Z boards.

They should do. The Consumer Contract Regulations allow you to examine the goods to determine suitability. You only have 14 days to notify them of your intention to return, unless theire terms specify a longer period.

(Disclaimer - I an mot a lawyer, this is my interpretation of the law, however Amazon do have one of the better return policies)

I have opened stuff before, even in the blister packs and returned to Amazon with no issues. In fact I now buy all my computer parts from Amazon because there returns policy is so good. Unlike other companies I used to buy from.

Thanks guys return request sent to amazon seems they are good with the customer service even if not so in other departments.

May go through Amazon for a replacement parts if I can find them save the delay waiting on refund etc.
