Just ordered a canon 300d from amazon! At least it will be paid for by the sale of my car. When I get it I will show you the results.

Nice! Also....damn you! Get a stupid expensive macro lense for it, like the Tamron 90mm
tamrons are ok...
but with macros you must choose wisely. 100mm macro would be best region to look for. i have a 50mm macro and its quite fiddly, mind you it is a fully manual camera...
p.s. well done for ordering your camera

DONT mess around with the macro lenses unless you really have money to burn. Grab the absolutely amazing quality Canon 50mm F1.8 mkII for £55 quid, which is a FANTASTIC portrait lens also, great for low light work too, cr*ps all over the kit lens
then get yourself some Extention tubes from jessops for £75, which reduces the minimum focus. these can be used with any EF mount lens so if u got yoursen a 70-300mm telefoto you got yourself a nice long macro lens.
Here is an image by a mate of mine with the 50mm f1.8 and the extention tubes on the 10D:
I think its 1:1 macro, which is crazy for the price extention tubes dont affect the image quality at all as there is no glass, so the uber sharpness of the 50mm evidently aint lost.
I can't wait until friday! Have also bought an extra battery for my honeymoon/holiday in darjeeling! Will have to absorb the initial cost of the camera before buying anything else.

The lens isn't optimised for close focusing like a Macro lens, so you do lose some quality vs. a macro lens. Still a good deal though as you say.Originally Posted by Tom

Rich :¬)
I have the new 20D (also x1.6 crop like the 300D), and have been considering either the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro lens or Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro.. Pricey, but both of which have very good reps.
The 50mm f/1.8 isn't sharp wide open, and IMHO doesn't make the best sense as a macro lens and doesn't do your camera justice..
Good luck though, and well done on the purchase!
Just my £0.02
