Power supply units

forgive this seemingly newbie question but biven the choices available I thought I'd check here first, since the advice is pretty much top notch most of the time

blurb:
I am rebuilding a computer, here's what I have:
asus a7n8x dlx, CPU, graphics card (budget-mid range, not power hungry!), a case, [keyboard/mouse/monitor etc]
so i basically need; memory an HDD, an OS - all of which are prettymuch sorted and about to order them.

what came to mind:
I have a 300w psu but not sure this will be enough so I took a look at various sites and found scan has quite a few on offer at relatively low prices. I particularly look for quiet one! but I have no idea of who does good ones and all that. so here's what I found, just wondering if its wise to go for 400w or 350w as there's lots on offer. I don't overclock or anything - not a hardcore gamer etc but still like a computer that works!

I would say that all depends on what you mean by "mid range". So long as there's no power connector required on the gfx card of your choice I'd say that the 300W unit will see you right.

If you're talking 6600GT/9800Pro however you might need something a bit beefier - I'd recommend getting a ~400ishW unit for somewhere around £35-40, don't skimp.

Brands on that page to look at in that price range are thermaltake, hiperpower and the 3xs clio units, I'd say.

cheapest good quality I know of is the thermaltake 480W, I use it and I do have a power hungry system and don't have any problems.

so the one above, a 3xs Silent-something or other-400w isn't all that great?
i probably will er towards a higher than necessary psu since it leaves future expansion possible.

would personally go with a ThermalTake, Antec or Tagan, Antec and Tagan tend to be more expensive as far as I know when you get to about 450W, Tagan do a 420W thats cheaper, but to be honest it won't leave much in the way of expansion. I use a ThermalTake on a P4 2.4, 1GB 6800GT and am switching to a AMD64 3500+ 2GB of Ram and serial ATA drives and the PSU is staying the same, I am perfectly happy with what the ThermalTake has done for me so far.
