Suggestions for a new PSU?

My current PSU (winpower 550w) is cheap n nasty, but reliable.
With my current hardware I thought it was about time I upgraded the PSU

I was thinking about getting the Antec NeoPower 480

I liked the option of removal cables and dual 12v rails, would this be ok for my system or if there any better recommendations please.

Tagan 480w PSU is extremely highly regarded here Dead silent and dead powerful with large stable rails

Handled my rig with ease and delivers 480w sustained iirc rather than the max 500w from say a Q-Tech (which would actually be like 2w sustained )

Antecs supposed to be a good PSU. Whats your budget?

Budget I would like to keep to under £100.

Vain I know, but PSU must be black, got clear side panel.

Sata power leads not required as I use Western Dig. secure connect leads which cover the sata power connectors.

or the Silent Zalman model, is ullllllllllltra quiet and stable as you can get, check the overclockers site to see a pic of it, it looks nice and cool too witha fan grille

I've got the Tagan 480W, seemed the best when I looked for reviews on the internet, and when asking on these very forums

I run mainly a 24/7 Seti rig; constantly @ 100% CPU usage.
Will the rated 20dB, of the TAGAN 480, be a useless figure for me? Does the fan speed/noise rise under load?

got an enermax noise taker 470w psu, ok, it isnt see thru or black but its damn great

and a very good upgrade from my qtec 550w

I have an Akasa paxpower and it's great. Looks dead nice too with a really dark super shiny metal finish.

This is a very interesting thread. What makes a 'good' PSU? I have been convinced by reading this forum that the Tagan 480W is a very good PSU and am considering it for my next PC. However, what makes it good? Is 'good' really aimed at high-power usage and overclocking needs? Or is it defined by the level of noise it produces? Or both?

For those building a basic system with no overclocking, no extra fans, no lights, etc., would any PSU be good?

Theres a new 550w psu coming out called the ultra X connect, if you serach theres loads of people looking for 1, I brought a tagan and it didn't work and a mate has one that makes a clicking sound, but they are meant to be good, the ultra x one, has detachable UV wires and comes in different ranges, looks really good. There is also the OCZ Technology ModStream Power Supply 520W which has just come out that looks really good as well, try looking at the link below for more info on the ultra x

It all depends if your going for looks (then these could be the way to go). By the sounds of it its got good performance and low noise, but probably not as good as a tagan.

Hmm - what makes a PSU good? Well:

Ability to keep it's voltages near specifications under changing load conditions (so 12V line stays at 12V) - which rules out Qtec

Ability to keep it's voltages stable (variations under 5% preferably) - which rules out Qtec

Appropriate currents available on each voltage line (not 30A on 5V and 4A on 12V) - which rules out Qtec

Reasonable efficiency (the power coming out is a good fraction of power going in - 60% is normally quite good) - which rules out Qtec

Not bursting into flames and/or frying your components - which rules out Qtec

Not lying on the spec sheet - which rules out Qtec
