I *beleive* one tier companies work with the chipset manufacturer to help develop it (such as ASUS and MSI with NF4), and two/three tier just use the chipset on their noards.

Yeah ASUS, MSI and Gigabyte got to work with NVidia, so they got their boards out first. As to the numbering, well I guess that size counts...
