    Should hard drives vibrate?

I bought a new laptop HD, its great for speed and noise, except that it vibrates. When it spins you can easily feel it even throug the laptop casing. Is this something normal or should i return it? The thing ive noticed is that it vibrates so much that the screw holding it in place comes undone, i can hear it ticking sometimes as it loosens, quite loud an annoying.

An almost perfect drive though, very quiet in spin and reading etc, just the vibrating thats bad.

    Its a Hitachi TravelStar 40GB, 5400RPM.

All conventional HDD contain moving parts so yeh they do vibrate a bit. The exact amount varies from drive to drive.

For desktop drives you can buy little rubber gromet things that reduce the noise caused by the vibrations, but I don't think there is much you can do about a lappy one. Deffo shouldnt lossen the screw however. I would consider returning it if its very bad.

That doesn't sound right - most of my hard drives have only 1 screw holding them in and I don't notice any vibrating whatsoever.

I always do the screws up tight, this thing does really go though, you can easily feel it when the laptop is on and your palm is on it when typing.

I want to return it but get basically exactly the same drive but without the vibration. But not sure wether to just return and go for another model. Definitly needs to be quiet though
