Power Supply upgrade
Greetings!
I currently have a QTec PSU (I know, I know) and I wanna get a DECENT one. I've spied this one in the coolingshop.com.
Is this a good make and is it a quality product? Its kinda hard to tell cause I don't know much about power supplies in particular. I understand QTecs don't give out stable power though, which is why they suck!

Id normally go about recommedning hipers as decent PSU's, but its come to light that there reliability is questionable.
Either way, that price is way too much for a Hiper.
For £10 more id recommend a Tagan 480Watter which is amazingly silent (i thitnk you can get this for £60ish for a site called something like gamecases.co.uk - can fish out the url if needed. ocuk also had this on offer but im not sure if the offer is over).
Other high end quality PSU include Enermax (Noisetakers is ure after silence), Antec, CWT (much cheaper rebranded Antecs available from scan.co.uk), OCZ powerstream (expensive). Thermaltake also make good PSU.
Another mass manufacturer of PSUs is FSP (Fortron Source Point or something) - they make the Zalman, and i think they make the silenx PSUs aswell, so they are pretty decent performers and are not too loud.

I note that this retailer seems to positively push QTec. Therefore I would be wary of buying from them. Tagan also appear to have reliability problems and they make OCZ supplies. Thermaltake's PSUs underperform on the 12V rails.
Not found anything wrong with Antec (not tried the CWT, so don't know whether the price cut means also a quality cut) or Enermax. Be aware that most of the Enermax on sale at Scan are currently old generation, without 24 pin or PCI-E capability (the 600W version is new). The new generation Enermax have a very neat solutiion to the 20/24 pin conundrum, making them a very useful method of future proofing.

That Hiper Type R is the PSU i moved to when I moved away from a Q-Tec looking for a stable replacement, and, the Hiper was no better IMO considering i had to pay for a new hard disk as the Hiper crisped my main drive :/
May have been a bad first experience, or a bad batch but thats put me right off them.
Tagan seems to be brand of choice around here, but as I haven't done any online shopping yet, besides trying to find tagan offline and having no luck, settled for a 500 W jeantec from pcworld component center. Fine PSU methinks, does the job nicely but my only complaint it is slightly noisy, but nothing that ones ears cannot adjust to
*Edit* I will say tho, about the best bit of that Hiper bundle is that free little fan they give, as it sure does give out/take in a lot of air, not bad considering its free

If it states Free then it is Free
As Kez said, you have paid for it, as part of the PSU. Had they just given it to you for nothing, it would be free then.
If you stick to brands like Thermaltake, Antec, Enermax, Tagan you should be alright. I personally chose a Tagan 480W - seemed the best from opinions on these forums and from reviews on the internet.

i upgraded from a case 350w psu to a 480w antec trueblue and it rocks tbh my pc is running smoother as it gives a stable output also it has a blue led and 2 fans 1 bottom which is right over my cpu and one at the back and my hdd makes more noize then tht

it has 2 cables tht u can plug ur fans into and it will control ur fans for u

You've prob had all your questions answered by now, but I'll offer my tuppenth worth anyway.
I went from a QTEC 550W (but it did have all good rails !), to an OCZ Powerstream 520W, the difference is piece of mind for me (you can manually overclock each rail on the OCZ by a pot at the back :-)). So if you into overclocking, this is a big bonus !!
I suppose it depends how much you want to spend, my OCZ cost be £100 (but it has 24 & 20 pin capable etc etc).
