    Need a laptop

I need a linux capable laptop.
lightweight is more important than cheap.
I've got an M2 ssd doing nothing, so ability to slot that in would be nice.
its for devving while im stuck on the train, so power unimportant. likewise battery life, i only have a 20 minute journey.

laptops aren't really my sphere of knowledge, so any suggestions where to look model wise, gratefully received.

    Re: Need a laptop

Pretty much anything? Getting the M.2 in a low-cost laptop is going to be unlikely I'm afraid: if it's doing nothing why not sell it to help finance the new purchase?

e.g. you can pick up an ASUS 14" with a Quad Core bay trail Pentium, 2GB of RAM and a 32GB SSD for £160: http://www.ebuyer.com/711779-asus-e4...e402ma-wx0055h

EDIT 2: Apparently the ASUS has a 2.5" drive bay so the storage can be expanded - the default OS & Recovery take up most of the installed eMMC but you could wipe over that for a Linux boot/swap partition then add a storage drive for everything else.

Actually, the more I read about that laptop the more I want one! I have absolutely no use for another laptop, but it's such a nicely designed device!

    EDIT:

alternatively browse somewhere like the Dell outlet for refurb models at really good prices...

    EDIT 3:

What kind of development? Worth seeing if there are any Chrome Apps that are suitable? A Chromebook would be a reasonable fit for your requirement too if there are...

    Re: Need a laptop

fair point. im going to be lugging this thing everywhere with me. macbook air would be ideal, apart from financially.

M2 has an OS on it still and I have no facility to wipe it or the info contained within. or i'd have sold it already. might investigate an adaptor.

python/django dev. so a chromebook isn't a bad idea. going to look into that now.

    Re: Need a laptop

2.5" adapters for M2 drives exist, but I suspect they only do pass through so it would depend on whether your drive was SATA or PCIe. I also don't know whether you can persuade the ASUS to boot from the SATA bay (although I'd be surprised if you couldn't, tbh).

I had a poke and it looks like there are some reasonable IDEs on Chrome, a few of which are available in offline mode (which you'd want for your train journey). Definitely worth a look...

Asus UX305? It goes for about £450-500 when on sale.

    Re: Need a laptop

Not tried it, but apparently if you go the Chromebook route you can run Linux stuff in a chrooted environment: http://www.howtogeek.com/162120/how-...-with-crouton/
