my samsung spinpoint 120gb 8mb drive is giving me a spin -up time of 60 and worst of 38 using smartfan, and is rated at 38% fitness...........i have a feeling tomorrow would be a good day to purchase a 25 pack of dvd's and back it up? what do you guys think? am i right to be worried?
Same thing said about my cuda4 - months later its still at 44% fitness.
In other words, the smart app doesnt know how to decipher it correctly for the drive, most likely.

S.M.A.R.T is a good thing in theory HOWEVER it is not correctly implemented in most drives firmware afaik. Most readings from it will either be quite random.. or just 0000 or FFFF or whatever.. but converted to decidmal look like real values.. (so look at the hex value it gives).
There is a S.M.A.R.T feature called autoscan which means when the HDD i idle, it will check itself for error - good in theory but not implemented properly in firmware.. = dont use it (dtemp has the option, and also a warning about it)
IMO SMART is only usefulll for not very accurate HDD temp measurement. Not accurate because the sensor is most likely on one of the chips and not a thermocouple inside the acctuall drive.
It could be usefull if you knew it was properly implemented..
