Windows 10 and Sound Cards - starting to get the hump with 10 now

All my cards worked in 7. I have 2 old ones, 1 really old one and the on-board sound.

Win 10 wont run my Razor Barracuda. It wont even let me install the drivers. Nor my M Audio (which to be fair is ancient)

But the on-board downloaded drivers from Microsoft and worked a treat...for 3 days.

then.. your speakers are not plugged in.

    which they are

downloaded drivers from Gigabyte. Installed. Every time I used the volume it froze the PC

Luckily I created a System Restore Point for this when the install was clean and tidy and running

System Restore (which if we're honest doesn't show up as System Restore... it shows WITHIN Create a System Restore point...and isn't in Reset this PC) rollwed me back and it's working again.

but for how long? I didn't install anything... nothing changed .. it just stopped working

Any suggestions for a cheap sound card that's bullet proof in Win10 please?

Re: Windows 10 and Sound Cards - starting to get the hump with 10 now

Can advise that Asus Xonar aren't quite there yet. I've not tried them personally but the driver notes for the driver I use (UNi) say the underlying drivers aren't ready yet: http://maxedtech.com/asus-xonar-unified-drivers/#Win10

The author is rather slating windows 10...

Re: Windows 10 and Sound Cards - starting to get the hump with 10 now

I've rolled back to when I had no onboard sound and turned it off in BIOS... rebooted

then rebooted with it active and installed the Gigabyte drivers.. in they went

no sound.. then it worked 2 minutes later

then I played some music.. then up popped the " you've just plugged in your speakers" .. which I hadn't... and then "you've unplugged your speakers" even though they're still working

    rather silly.

Re: Windows 10 and Sound Cards - starting to get the hump with 10 now

I have installed the Realtek software.

    Where is it?

I went into All Apps... looked over and over.. it's not in there
So I typed the word Realtek and up it popped.

No worries.. I'll right click it and add to my Start Menu... nope.
No worries.. I'll add it as a shortcut to my desktop task bar... nope.

So.. assuming many people don't even KNOW you can type anything into a computer with no box to type into I was told how to do it, or I'd never have found it) how do I know what else I have and don't know about?

It's how I found Create System Restore Point.. and that too was just because I know it's there.

Win10 is dragging me backwards into a world of not knowing what's on my PC

Re: Windows 10 and Sound Cards - starting to get the hump with 10 now

I've had terrible W10 and soundcard woes too.

Initially, on "upgrade" to W10 it wouldn't recognise my ancient Soundblast X-fi at all, so I tried to find alternative drivers. None worked, even those reported as working in W10. I then resorted to switching on the onboard audio (previously disabled in BIOS), and the process of installing the Realtec drivers suddenly kicked my Soundblaster into life (bizarrely).

At the last major system update last week, it restarted to no sound again. This time I had the same message you have - no speakers plugged in for either sound device. My current "fix" is to use the optical digital output from the onboard sound (which is somehow still working) and connect an external DAC. Far from an elegant solution though.

Re: Windows 10 and Sound Cards - starting to get the hump with 10 now

I'm surprised by that GheeTsar, I have a X-Fi XtremeGamer which was recognised by Windows 10 with no issue. It's all installed and even the Creative Audio Control Panel is working. What model do you have?

I think the sound card market has been stagnant for quite some time with no real improvements over the last few years and unfortunately drivers have been left by the wayside for many devices.

Re: Windows 10 and Sound Cards - starting to get the hump with 10 now

I have the very same model Jonj! I don't get how one person can have such a good experience and another such a poor one, with the same hardware.

I quite agree about the sound card market. When I was first wrestling with this problem I looked into buying a new card, given the age of the X-fi, and found hardly any new products and even fewer reviews. Has onboard sound come on such a long way that it's no longer worth having?

Re: Windows 10 and Sound Cards - starting to get the hump with 10 now

I recently upgraded my system and thought I would give the on board sound a go and I could notice the difference immediately and not for the better so like yourself I thought I would upgrade my ageing X-Fi. I heard good things about the Xonar cards but when looking at different models it was clear they were made a few years ago now and then read about the problems people had with drivers.

So in the end stuck with what I had. At the end of the day though with so many different configurations its not surprising some people will have issues and others wont, I have been in the same position myself with other hardware, I think we all have at some point.

Is windows 10 changing the driver at all?

Just I had some ultra bad driver 'flap' with nvidia drivers as windows 10 kept insisting on putting the old ones back on.

I've seen the AMD HD Audio drivers do some really weird ... stuff ... on various windows versions, most notably Win 7. Might be worth uninstalling the AMD HD Audio device if you're not using HDMI, Zak...

I am using my 280x to push sound to my monitor through display port and it was all fine on w8.1. Now with w10 it keeps loosing sound. The only way to get it back is a reboot.
