    HDD noise... Annoying...

I recently purchased a 200GB Maxtor drive from Scan... Well.. Lets just say the operation noise on that HDD is a little LOUD!

The clicking sound in this drive as loud as me snapping my fingers! I used to run Maxtor Diamond 8 IDEs and they are BY FAR quieter than these SATA (NQC) drives..

I was beginning to believe that the HDD is probably busted.. Anyone of you used Maxtor Diamond 10 Sabre series drives before? Do you hear these ultra loud noise?

I have a Samsung Spinpoint 160 on RAID and its virtually silent... Very dissapointed if this Maxtor is by default this noisy...

I have the same Maxtor and mine makes a weird noise when you scroll your mouse and its annoying, I will be throwing the Maxtor away soon and go back to Western Digital, maxtor drives aren't all that they are made out to be.

Go to Maxtors website and download some bootable (floppy or cd) diagnostic software. Run all the tests, if any come back as having found errors, contact Maztor and if needed, return the drive. If they all pass then it's likely just noisey, you could always return in and exchange it for another Samsung.

Yeah I agree, I've used Western Digital for a good while now. I recently made some changes in makes, I've tried a Seagate and a Maxtor drive and was not impressed. So I moved back to Western Digital for good.

The speed is just fine.. I dont see any problems running it other than the NOISE! I'll just give Maxtor's utility a download.. maybe it might tell me more...

Yeah, the utility should check the drive is in full working order. If that comes through with no errors then it's likely just noisey. Which sounds about right for a Maxtor drive. Make sure you run all the tests on the utility, including the long, full tests.

Spinpoints.. u can barely hear anything with it fastened tight on the casing... they're really good drives.. pity they're more expensive..

Maxtor Diamondmax 10's reviews were supposed to be good... I'm so totally dissapointed.. The last thing you want to hear from so much effort in making everything silent.. is the perpetual finger snapping at 60Hz everytime you copy files..

I know it's not particularlt helpful, but I wouldn't touch Maxtor drives ever, ever, ever again. We used to buy them and they had by far the highest failure rate of any brand of hard drive we bought, even around the time of the IBM 'Deathstar' fiasco.

(I'm not including the Fujitsu drives we replaced in that, because a: they came preinstalled in the Tiny PCs and b: Fujitsu don't make desktop HDDs any more)

Maxtor do seem to have a higher failure rate than most.

I think I had a pair of these and I wound up getting rid of these as fast as I could. I couldn't believe that these things were noisier than Raptors. I've got my eye on the new 16MB cache SATAII from WD when Scan finally gets them in...

Yeah I've heard they are very quiet, although I'm not sure I'd get one. I may if one of my WD's fail (which I hope they don't )

Hmm, I always thought Spinpoints were cheap.

I think Maxtor drives get high reviews because they are dirt cheap, but I've had one and I got rid of it within two weeks. Very noisy and pretty slow.

Yeah, I agree. That's always been what I've read/heard about them, not really a good legacy.

I think they get good reviews due to the price and the number of people who buy them. I never trust any normal reviews about quietness, everyone’s perception of quiet is different along with the fact everyone has different setups. They could say they couldn’t hear it over the rest of the fans etc when they have a very loud computer. I guess some people even might think stock AMD/Intel HSF's are quiet! . So I always go on my own experience with items that make noise.

Reviews are tricky things and if you read enough by the same reviewer you'll realise that some are tone deaf, some are easily pleased and some haven't the faintest clue. Brand loyalty also counts for a lot and people will dismiss products out of hand (three years ago nobody dared say a bad word against IBM drives) Also a lot of reviewers will only have the kit for a few days or a week in anything but a normal home set-up and their reactions will be based on their perceptions. A magazine like PC Pro will rate a particularly tricky firewall or router quite low because they don't really know or take the time to configure it (how NetGear gets higher exposure than Draytek even though the latter is superior) and as Speed points out, a lot of points are given for value.

Again another example is the Gigabyte R800XL fanless card which is highly rated as silent and fast-running. It may be silent but it's not particularly fast for it's class, heats up to ridiculous levels unless you get direct cooling on it (rendering the whole passive setup pointless) and if you have Corsair LED ram you won't even be able to fit it on an Asus SLi board. Oh, and it has no onboard power header so if you wanted to swap out for an Arctic Cooling Silencer you're out of luck.

    Get Raptors
