What does he want to do with it? Standard office apps? 3D rendering? Does he need to use it on the move (i.e. are weight and battery life real concerns)? More info please?
Would like it to be used for regular office apps but occasionally games. he has no lmit, so may aswell get a good graphics card. Looking at at least 3 gig processor 512 ram min. 17 inch screen would be nice. 3-4 hours battery life.
You arent going to get 3-4hr battery life with a 3ghz processor. I have a toshiba p20 3.4ghz 17" laptop. It was the top model, not sure if it still is and it can manage 1.5hr battery life.
tbh, its gonna be plugged in most of the time, so i just said wot i liked, dont mean i can get it
Email HP and ask what the best performance laptop they do is. Then go buy it. Simple.

Get a Dell 9200 Inspiron, you won't get anything much better....

if you want some battery life go for a centrino, the powerful ones 1.8-2 ghz are actually really good, short pipelines and massive cache, surprisingly good for games! ati m11 is probably the lowest spec gfx you want (9700pro i think) hp must do something like that?
Don't be fooled by the GHz rating - that cpu may have been a 2GHz pentium-M, which are very good (beat 3GHz pentium 4 in things like games)

Dell make some pretty decent laptops, along with some rather decent desktops if you just want something fairly cheap, and their servers are actually very good.
The only bad thing about Dell is sometimes the customer support can be a bit iffy.

sos, i just hate dell, cant help it, i was born like it. It really annoys me that there PSUs cant be used on any thing but thier own motherboards. the notbooks are getting worse though, poor quality and overpriced for the spec. (i say sitting here on my dell, with my other one upstairs (win 95 and redundant).

Quite so, Stoo - personally, I've had a chance to compare Dell Latitudes and Inspirons against machines from quite a few different manufacturers (Toshiba, Sony, Compaq, HP) and their machines are usually as well built as anything at comparable price points and usually cost less for more. That, and I've been using their Poweredge servers for years, and they are as reliable as half a brick in a sock. And FWIW, their customer support on the Inspirons and Dimensions can be a bit ropey (though usually effective if you hassle them enough) but on their Optiplex, Poweredge and Latitude machines they are absolutely spot on.
That said, for the requirements you outline, Merlin, I can only second the recommendation above for the Inspiron 9200 if battery life is a priority at all. If not, look at the 9100 - the Mobility Radeon 9800 graphics upgrade (256MB) would help. OK, the screen is only a 15.4", not the 17" available on the 9200, but if the machine will be used for gaming, I'd trade the screen area for the extra horsepower.
