Spec me a New htpc gaming rig (2k budget)

    Hi .

i am looking to finally upgrade my HTPC ive had for the past 4-5 years.

    Usage for my htpc are:

    • 4k gaming(future proof)
    • Media consumption(mostly streaming)

GPU wise i think i am set on a 1080 nvidia one and would like a quad core CPU . I do not want to mess with overclocking so any CPU that already has a high stock clock is good for me. Something from Skylake?

My budget is around 2k and needs to include a copy of windows 10. No keyboard etc needed just the base unit.

    Thanks in advance

You'll have to wait for 4K gaming, we're not there yet. The rumoured 1080ti might be a starting point though.

I thought the new 1080 nvidia cards can output and play most games at 4k res?

None of the cards available today would last 4 to 5 years at 4K and not even the rumoured GTX1080TI which is being launched this year. Also,is the TV you have a 30HZ one or not??

Are you looking at a compact/quiet chassis for HTPC use?

Save a fair bit on win10 by buying a win 7 pro license and upgrading while it's still free (29th July?), around £20 all in, unless you can transfer your license from the outgoing machine?

Re: Spec me a New htpc gaming rig (2k budget)

Compact i dont mind as long as it can fit a full size GPU and PSU along with 1-2 ssd and one 3.5hdd for data storage.

I have an OEM on exisiting htpc so i dont think i can transfer it. Is 29th July last day where i can upgrade from win 7 pro to win 10?

I'm fairly sure it is, certainly towards the end of this month is the cut-off for free upgrades.

I think the Windows 10 upgrade is also PC specific, so it stays a Windows 7 licence for any other PCs you want to use it on. On a £2000 budget I'd just pay the £85 for Windows 10 instead of hunting down a legitimate Windows 7 copy for £40-50.

Is there any point in splashing out for 32gb on a gaming machine? Same for the i7 over i5.

    Some games are cpu dependant.

32gb may be overkill i agree. this is just a Alpha version of a proposed build

You're overspending on the power supply and CPU cooler, and probably the motherboard too. Those bits are only of interest for the serious overclocker. You may want a Z170 board for the higher memory speed support but unless you're adding a lot of high end hardware over the life of your PC you don't need an expensive one.

Windows 10 Professional doesn't offer a lot to the individual power user, almost all of the features are strictly for business (bitlocker may be an exception). I'd also go for a retail copy rather than using OEM against it's licence agreement as the differences in price as tiny (£85 vs. £75-80).

The i7-6700k only supports dual channel memory so more than two sticks is pointless. Better to leave the slots open for any future expansion you need.
