Linux & Gaming Rig 2016 - Build Log
Hi all,
It has been ages since I owned a 'PC' - the closest thing I have to that right now is a Raspberry Pi 3. Been on Mac for a good long while but I've been wanting to have a local-linux box (even though I run most of my stuff on the AWS/Linode/DigitalOcean cloud).

Personally I would probably consider the Core i7 5820K TBH especially with a single card setup,and shouldn't the RAM be in 4 stick sets?? The PSU is probably way too much for the setup IMHO - a decent 500W to 600W would be more than enough IMHO. SLI and XFire do have a lot of issues with current engines - DX12 explicit multi-adaptor might change that but again it depends on how many devs will be bothered too.
I would probably get a non-reference GTX1070 over an FE GTX1080 too although it depends on what resolution you are running games at.

This is the second ER-X and I've also got a TOUGHSwitch. Primary ER-X connects to my LTE router (WAN) - from there I'm running one subnet 10.0.0.0/16 and with the second I'm going to run another one in the 172.16.0.0/16 range. The TOUGHSwitch lets me setup VLANs as needed.
Will be moving my work related stuff into the second subnet, which I want to keep as isolated and secure as possible.
This way guests etc, can connect to the 10.x network along with family devices etc.

1. Yes, I will replace this with a 4-stick set. Just grabbed this pair for now, to get it booted and running. I can send it back-within 30-days (which I will do). Need to find a retailer that's able to ship to my location that carries the 4-stick sets.
2. I wanted to leave room for the option of running a second 1080 in SLI.
3. The store I ordered online only had the FE GTX1080 in stock, and they ship to where I live with the cheapest DHL pricing. Large - 12KG box (high volumetric weight) for around $200. That's bonkers, I used to ship my personal effects to the UK and DHL would charge $400-500 or more.

Hmm seems I too had the wrong impression. This thread seems to indicate that as long as the second 'kit' exactly matches the first kit of RAM, then it's fine.

I suppose there's a chance there could be some inconsistencies as the 4-stick sets are properly tested.
An interesting point is the warranty though. Anyone else done anything similar?

Yeah,just get another pair of DIMMs and you can run the CPU in quad channel - that CPU will last you a VERY long time for a gaming rig.

I started around midnight and wanted to get the basics sorted - installing the PSU and radiator/fans.

I ended up taking the front panel off, so as to remove the caddy holding the 5.24" devices, which I currently have no plans for.

It didn't take too long to get the radiator installed, and I left the CPU block (AIO cooler) wrapped up to prevent any scratching of the copper side; it came with some goop applied, but before I did the install I removed that and used some nano compound. I normally use Arctic Silver, but tried something different for this build.

Fast forward to Sunday (14th August 2016)
I failed to take snaps of installing the M.2 NVMe Samsung 950 Pro 256GB drive into a recessed slot in the mainboard, although this was documented in video. Here's a close up of the Intel i7 6850K in all its glory...

Cheers LeBron. So far this has just been a straight up build.
I'm not entirely sure if I'd look at modding this a bit, unfortunately tad tied up with work at the moment.
I would have liked to have gone with a full water-cooling setup, mostly for kicks but that may be a side project I'd look at for later.
Thoughts on AIOs anyone? Supposedly these do not need filling over their lifespan.

Couple updates since adding another pair of RAM into the system to run as Quad-channel DDR4.
With AIDA64 was pushing around 200W RMS with decent efficiency around 92% running 100% CPU load during the AIDA64 stress test. I've also bumped up the 1080 blower fan to 85% when gaming to keep temps at around 72degC max (stock settings).
Here are the OC settings:
* Enabled XMP (Sync all cores)
* Turbo multiplier set to 40x.
* DRAM Clocked @ 2,666 MHz + SVID Support disabled.
* Increased DRAM Voltage (CHA, CHB, CHC, CHD) to 1.3Vdc.
