Is it worth overclocking a ti4200 128mb

Any OC will give you a performance boost. For the 4200 you just need coolbits or rivatuner. For the athlon you need to go in the BIOS - which varies from motherboard to motherboard. What have you got?

Get your card clocked m8.Gf4 ti4200's were ideal to overclock.I had one and it clocked to ti4600 speeds.GF4's were great cards.Keep and eye out for sparklies and tears and you'll be ok.Don't forget it's for free as well.
As above what mobo do you have? If we knew we could help with the cpu oc.

Motherboard doesn't matter. Just get coolbits, double click and you get a new option under the NVidia part of your graphic settings - two sliders for core and memory clock.

Right - no offence but you sound new to this. So first off: With overclocking ANYTHING take it slowly - don't expect miracles - just because you can SET something faster doesn't mean it will work at that speed. Having said that if you know what you've got and it's not brand new then people will probably have already overclocked the b'jesus out of it and you'll have a good idea what to aim for.

I reckon a 4200 (depending on the memory on it) should get to about 300MHz core and 600MHz (DDR - so 300 real MHz) but the memory may be slower - especially on the 128MB 4200s. Someone here may actually KNOW what to expect (and if so please share!). Do you know the exact model number of the card? You might only be able to get 300Mhz on the core and 500 - 550MHz (DDR - 250-275 real MHz) on the memory.

To actually test that the card is working when it's overclocked you can download one of the 3DMark tests (01 and / or 03 probably makes the most sense for a 4200) from www.futuremark.com and you'll be best off testing it with actual games you play too. If you overclock too high you will either start to see errors on the screen during 3d use - like bad colours, bad shapes ('spikey' polygons) or general 'snow' like effects on the screen or the PC may just crash (lock up or blue screen).

(BTW not ignoring the CPU - we can with it later)

If you haven't already done so you might want to download the latest nvidia drivers (www.nvidia.com)... Though the latest drivers won't necessarily be the best for your card - as it's an older card and nvidia may have dropped some optimisations out of the drivers for it in favour of boosting the performance of newer cards... Having said that I would still go for the latest ones anyway just as potentially they fix any bugs / issues with games

BTW as for IF it's worth doing. Depends on (1) if you need more performance (presume you do otherwise why ask) and (2) if you can afford to upgrade it (as overclocking the 4200 will never bring it up to say ATI 9800 Pro or nVidia 6600GT levels - both of which are around £125)

in my experience the detonator drivers low/mid 40's are best, as beyond that nVidia started causing intentional slow-downs to favour the FX series that had just been released at the time...despite the high end Ti4xxx's being much better, was a sneeky way of enforcing the fx's speed.
I use 44.03 at the moment on my gf2 mx400 because of this.

I used 45.33 i think, seemed to work the best. As for clock speeds:

Gainward ti4200 - 306/567; 64mb
Gainward golden sample ti4200 - 310/621; 64mb

So there is quite a bit of variation in the cards, they are excellent cards. And so cheap now.

Games that run on Q3 engine (Q3, rtcw, mohaa etc) and HL based games, will be fine in 1280 and a little AA/AF on (2 or 4), with details on high. BF1942, and COD require the graphics down a bit, but 1024 is still easy. And D3/HL2/Farcry dont really love the card that much. Although i know HL2 is ok in 800x600 med details.

Overall, you cant beat it for a budget card!!

I stand corrected. for those that want it http://www.guru3d.com/ seems to have a stock of most of the drivers released...right back to some of the really early ones!

Malfunction, have you had a go at OC-ing yours yet? I had a look at a volt-modding site but thats just insane!
