Why the heck doesn't someone make a SFF with 400 watt PSU?!?!

:rant: After having two soltek QBICs die on me from trying to run a mere Athlon 64 3200+, 2 x 512 MB Crucial Ballistix DDR400, RADEON 9600 XT AIW, Sound Blaseter Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro, Pioneer 16 X DVD-RW, and Maxtor Maxline III 300 GB, I swore I would never buy another Soltek (they told me that I'd run a Athlon FX51 and Radeon X800 XT no problem on the dinky ass PSU... yeah... right...)
When the heck will someone throw in a PSU to power something even slightly high end? Does anyone know of any 350 watt or higher SFFs with socket 939 (and preferably with the nforce4?) Anyone know some sites that follow these sort of developments?

SN25P will be using the NF4 chipset (DDR1, PCI-E, Envy, etc...) and be using a 350W SilentX PSU.

I know it's not 400watts but Enermax do 2 psu's 1 @ 285watts and 1 @ 270watts these are noted for quality. Have a look at this link :)

But you seem to have had bad luck with your Soltek as I have the 3801a since last June and had no probs with the psu and it's fully loaded 2 optical drives, 2 h/drives, 128mb video card, tv card, 1 gb ram and 5 usb connections, running most of the time day and night and my psu is a 250watt.

The new Qbics have 300 watt psu's fitted to all their models now.

I actually had TWO of the same soltek model fail (the QBIC for socket 754) in a period of less than a month. That's what convinced me they sucked. That and they flat out lied when I asked what I could put in it, and it failed to do so.

I'm running about as much gear as you suggest in my SN95G5 and its 250 watt PSU, but with a 3500+ running at 2.475 GHz, with no problems whatsoever. So maybe its not the power supply? Then again, its not a QBic.

Possible reasons for not going with nuclear power plants in SFF, size and heat. Oh year, and not needed.

Why no 400W? Because it's not yet needed... Two dead Solteks? Stop buying Solteks.

Don't be sucked into thinking that a higher number is best.

The 250watt psu's that shuttle use are rated to output that at a higher temp, where has your 400+ watt desktop psu is only rated to summat like 20/30 c and then it drops off :s

Athlon 64 3200+ would use no more than 70W at absolute maximum. Winchester drops down to 50W :) X800XT uses around 70W of power as well, so a 9600XT AIW will be below that.

Theres 140W maximum right there, so I doubt you would need more than 200W in your PC (other components all together won't go over 30W). Chances are you were unlucky, or the Qbic's PSU was of Q-Tec quality.

Why do you think it was the PSU? It could be the mobo, it could be a power surge, it could be a surge down the phone line, etc.

Nothing is worse than Q-Tec, wash your mouth out :)

Trouble is manufactures know people like big numbers, "oh look says 500 watt on the box, must be good" people should really look at what power is delivered on the various rails, a good well built/calibrated lower wattage psu is often better, such as, the silent x psu that shuttle uses.

SFFs are not designed for systems where a high powered PSU might be required both space and cooling requirements are other limiting factors - you are not likely to see 400W from an SFX PSU chassis any time soon... The Antec Aria case has one of the higher powered PSUs in the compact case field - and the new Enermax Venus series has their excellent 270W PSU that is rated for up to 20A on the +12 rail.
. Not to mention the fact that a lot of SFFs use proprietary mobo and PSU designs which limits how gonzo you can get with them. This is the reason I probably won't own one - besides which if I can't fit at least 3 SCSI HDs and a couple of opticals, then no way Jose...

fyi the new shuttle psu's are 300/350watt :D

they can hold 3 hdds and one optical device which is all that is needed.

proprietary mobo and psu design.....well duh, how did you expect them to shove so much in such a small space ?

this forum is for the help of others with sff's not for people to put negitive comments about sffs.

each design will have flaws but such is life, we are all flawed.
