Question Dell PowerEdge T20-9186 Tower Server

    Hi Folks,

I was looking at another small server type to use as a HTPC in the living room and came across this. However I can't find out much info about it.

Can I put a gpu in this? E.g. an AMD R7 240 Low profile (Like I have in my Gen 8 Microserver).

If so, this would make a capable HTPC.

    Anyone have any ideas?

Re: Dell PowerEdge T20-9186 Tower Server

The Dell website lists the T20 as having a PCI-E 16x slot, two of them in fact:
    http://www.dell.com/uk/business/p/poweredge-t20/pd
    http://i.dell.com/sites/doccontent/s...ical_Guide.pdf

It looks like it's a full height case though, so a low profile card wouldn't work unless it came with a full height bracket (they all do when buying new).

Do you have a specific reason to add a 240 over the integrated HD 4600 graphics though? I wouldn't have thought it'd add much.

Shame that page doesn't have more customisation options; looks like a nice base for a compact gaming build given the Xeon processor options and x16 Gen 3 PCie slot...!

Re: Dell PowerEdge T20-9186 Tower Server

For the price (unless you've found the Pentium version cheap somewhere), I fail to see why you'd buy a tower server (which probably isn't designed for quiet operation) over a basic quiet self-build. Either AMD or Intel IGPs with an HDMI-supporting motherboard would be fine and could be built a lot cheaper, or there's probably a range of pre-built machines that are better suited to the job...

It's only £100 after cashback mate. Hard to beat for that price. I also have a low end GPU in the house which I can use.

It doesn't explicitly say, but I'd be surprised if the DisplayPort wasn't capable of full dual mode with audio. I'm getting HDMI with Audio out of the DisplayPort output on my older i3-2120-based Dell Optiplex 790 USFF.

I've never had much luck finding the exact details of what AMD's current range supports in terms of video codecs but I believe it's pretty similar to Intel's HD4600 - Hybrid 8-bit support for HEVC and VP9 - until you get to the Tonga and Fiji chips (285/380/380X and Nano/Fury/FuryX).

Heh, can't argue with that IMNSHO the Pentiums are overpriced, but it'd be hard to stick a mobo/APU/4GB/500GB together for £100, and you certainly wouldn't get a Pentium in there.

The R7 240 is based off Oland, which is GCN 1.1 (same revision as Bonnaire). I know that gets you the fancy audio coprocessor, but I'm not sure about video codecs. And of course if you have even the slightest thought about casual gaming on it...

TBH mate, I'd consider a FireTV stick with Plex/Kodi installed. I did have an Intel NUC sitting under my TV, but it wasn't nearly as stable as the slightly underpowered MacMini it replaced. Add in that it also works with Amazon Prime, Netflix, iPlayer etc natively, and I can't really see the upside to a monster box sitting under your telly.

I've already bought it haha! Just in case it sold out. Guess I will give it a go and hope for the best!

If the onboard graphics were fine for playing movies etc through XBMC then great. No gaming required.

Hey, I was just wondering how your Dell PowerEdge t20 is fairing? I'm considering buying one myself due to the great price! Did it live up to your hope of not being too loud? As that is my most significant concern at the moment..

    Regards

How's it going, my T20 is due to arrive today for exactly the same purpose.
I've bought a little 120GB SSD for the OS, and intend to chuck in 3x1TB drives for now (as they are spare).

I don't use Kodi, just Plex... too lazy to setup anything else.

I read is several places people claiming this T20 is quieter than the HP Microserver,,, which is super quite. So my fingers are crossed too

Re: Dell PowerEdge T20-9186 Tower Server

Hi folks. It's great. Installed a low profile gpu for hdmi out (the on board displayport does not output sound!) And running it as a media centre with kodi. It connects to my main server and plays everything over the network with no problems. I can confirm that it is quieter than the gen 8 microserver as I have one of them also. For the £100 I paid I can't fault it.
