A winnie + crap RAM

hi guys, i am getting my new rig soon (see my signature for spec.), just wondering has anyone OC a winnie with rubbish RAM like mine? it would be really interesting to see if someone had give it a go...

That's not crap, it's just not overclocking RAM.
You'll probably have to put a divider on it to get the most of the CPU.

It bad ram yes, but you sure you wont push for another 512 stick? You would feel the difference.

It's not that bad RAM. I'vew had my P4 3.0c running at 3.6 with 1 gig of exactly the same RAM installed. Set the divider to 5/4 to keep it running at about the same speed.

well the ram is OK but its not as fast as alot of ram. And for £30 more for twin 512mb moduals, u get some nice ram.

The thing with AMD64 is there is no 1:1 divider as the system bus is running at 1.6ghz and memory is 400mhz usually 1:4, so there is no penalty for using dividers as there was with the XP processors

Exactly. You can get a decent OC on A64 with any RAM from PC2700 upwards, as long as you get a board with the right bios options.

How much have you got to spend on RAM? Seems a bit shortsighted getting an SLi system with only 512 meg of RAM, any game you get now will still stutter even with dual 6800's if you only have 512 meg of RAM...

ya, i got my RAM as a present from my flatmate who is moving to DDR2 with Intel (i told him not to, but he already made his decision) anyway, i was wondering what is divider? any where can i find one and find more information about it? thank you again for helping me out

Crucial is certainly not bad RAM. Its commonly used in server critial computers as its regarded as some of the most reliable RAM you can buy.

All AMD64 systems can use higher than PC3200 but the memory will only run 400MHz unless you overclock the FSB. A64s don't have a divider like a P4 or Athlon XP, but a multiplier. It is referrenced in the BIOS as either 400MHz (2:1 or 2x 200), 333MHz (5:3 or 1.66 x 200), 266MHz (4:3 or 1.33 x 200), etc...and there is NO penalty for using these multipliers like there is on 32 bit only systems because it is impossible to run the memory sync'd with the true speed of the A64's memory buss so it's always async.

The reason I recommend PC3200 is it is usually a better value because the average consumer assumes the higher number means better performance. This is totally false. If you use high quality PC3200 it will run faster than low quality PC4400 and usually with tighter timings.

Custom PC did a review of RAM a few months ago and they came to the conclusion that the RAM you have was the best value as the performance difference between that and the best tested was only a matter of a couple of percent. They still have it as their recommended 3200 RAM on their best buys pages
Rather than replacing it you would notice a bigger improvement by buying a second identical stick so your board could work in dual channel mode. That would give you between 5 and 10 percent improvement.

I thought the a64 run memory in sync by default? An a64 3200 + for example runs at 10 x 200 ,Hypertransport at 5 x 200 and memory at 200 (DDR 400). The 200 value is one setting in the bios and affects all the others.
