*Solved* Weird PC/Graphics Card Issue help needed

So my main rig (watercooled) had been running stable for years, then the other night in an effort bleed the last of the air out it I had it turned upside down and switched on. THis got the air out but when I had it upright again and all hooked up I no video and the board error code (98) suggested no video. My immediate thought was that water must have leaked and fried the video card (Radeon R9 290) although there was no evidence of this. When I plugged the video cable into the onboard graphics the PC booted straight away.

Anyways I took the card out and swapped the waterblock off it for the air cooler and just to check I put it in another rig, and it booted fine!! So I put a spare video card in the main watercooled rig and it boots as well but put the 290 back in (now aircooled) and I get the same error code and no boot. Tried different psu and cables still wont boot. I'm at a loss as to what the problem is so has anyone got an idea??? The motherboard is a Gigabyte Z77X-ud5h by the way.

Your graphics card hates you, apparently. What was the spare video card you tested with in the water cooled rig? Wondering if the power usage difference between the "broken" and "spare" cards made the difference between booting and not booting.

Yeah that had crossed my mind too, the spare is a MSI R6770 so quite a big difference in power draw I'd imgine. But I swapped PCI-E slots as well. The only thing I haven't tried is different PSU in the main rig which would be quite hard to do at present.

Re: Weird PC/Graphics Card Issue help needed

Graphics cards seem to shut down if they don't see power coming in on their PCIe connectors, so I would suspect it isn't seeing those rails/connections/leads.

My thoughts too, something to do with the power draw on the 290...try cleaning the PCI-E slot (maybe the lower power draw on the 6770 negated the issue) and wipe clean the connections on the card itself.

So when you put the 290 back in did you try both PCI-E slots?

Everything is clean, also doesn't explain why it won't boot in a different slot if it was dirty. The only thing I can think is the PSU is faulty and not supplying decent volts although it's a good unit.

Yep both cards, both slots. MSI fine, 290 no go.

*Solved* Weird PC/Graphics Card Issue help needed

*SOLVED* Found out what the issue was after taking a break for the day and thinking about things. Turns out it was a bios issue. Basically Gigabyte boards are well known for corrupting their bioses but luckily they have fail safe procedure whereby if it detects a bios corruption it'll automatically reflash the bios from a second bios chip (albeit an old version but enough to get you going again).

Turns out I must have corrupted the bios when i was frequently switching the power off and on bleeding the system. It then reflashed an old bios but this bios doesn't work with modern cards. Hence when I switched it on again once it was bled I was faced with what seemed like a dead 290. It also explains why my old R6770 worked.

When I had this light bulb moment I checked what bios version the board was showing and sure enough it was F4, pre production version, so downloaded the latest version (F16) on another pc. Connected to the onboard graphics, flashed via the bios utility, shut down, replaced the graphics card with the 290, booted and voila we have graphics once again!!!

Something so simple has wasted god knows how many hours, caused trouble with the wife and now I have to rebuild the machine physically as I've drained the coolant, replaced the card's waterblock with hte aircoolers etc so have more hours to look forward to getting the rig back in action.

Argh..........................I hate computers but I love fixing things and finding out the cause and thus the solution. Thank you for everyones' help and suggestions.

Thank you, not something I'd have thought of either, and I've got a couple of Gigabyte board based systems!

Re: *Solved* Weird PC/Graphics Card Issue help needed

To be fair I've had experience of this before kind of, when I first got the card a couple of years ago I thought it was doa as it wouldn't boot then with my MSI X58 board. So after much research and a few calls Aria, who I got the card from, we figured out what was going on (Aria's tech guy was really good by the way). Apparently its all to do with UEFI bioses and old boards that dont have them or have early UEFI bioses.

The Gigabyte bios corruption issue is something I'm very familiar with due to overclocking and I've "fixed" many a supposed dead Gigabyte board by forcing the bios recovery process to kick in when it doesn't do it automatically. Dont know if it's still the case but a ahwile ago Ebay was awash with "dead" spares or repairs Gigabyte Z77 boards and I bought about 7 of them for silly cheap money. Every single one of them had the bios corruption issues which i fixed, a couple also had bent pins which I straightened and got all the boards working perfectly again. Kept 4 of them and sold the remaining three which paid for the ones I kept. I think Gigabyte must have improved their bioses as this doesn't seem to be such an issue now looking on the interwebs.

Anyway my issue was just remembering these two experiences, putting them together and coming out with the correct answer........this time.
