    Pentium 4 won't die

My old man has recently updated his home-server to a HP microserver, which has freed up its predecessor, my (very) old desktop.

It's a Northwood Pentium 4 3GHz that refuses to die. Unsurprisingly running an Abit IC7 motherboard (which has a long-seized northbridge fan, and a blown RAID chip). It has ran pretty much 24/7 for the last 10 years.

It finally got replaced as you can't install ESX on it. Being Northwood it doesn't even have x86-64 extensions.

So Hexus folk, what does one do with a 13 year old PC that operates just fine, albeit not at the speed or efficiency of modern computers.

I've got a Core 2 Quad 6700 Extreme here... rock solid.

Same thing... what do I do with it?

Well the CPU I keep and the mobo I bin

Core 2 Quad is hardly of the same vintage as a Northwood.

My Athlon XP sits around to tend to any IDE drives that may occasionally crop up (from PVRs etc.)

    Re: Pentium 4 won't die

I was tempted to get a fancy window case for it, and some over the top water-cooling and keep posting "my new rig" threads across the Internet.

Alas, I threw away my P200 last year, so if I was going to do that on anything, it should have been on that. Although that was an AT so not sure I could have found a case for it.

I'm tempted to buy a GeForce 4 or 5, a SSD and slap Ubuntu on it. I expect it'll work just fine for a desktop for somebody. Just not sure who.

    Kill it with fire.

Ain't much call for a single core CPU with 200W+ load power consumption.

You're thinking of the Prescott and later P4s. The northwoods topped out at around 80W TDP with the 3GHz+ versions (esp. those supporting HT), but most were under 70W. All the prescott & later (apart from a couple of later Cedar Mill steppings) were over 80W, many of them *well* over...

Dashers; If you want an upgrade I've still got a box of socket 478 processors kicking around that *should* have a 3.2GHz Hyper Threaded P4 in it....

We have dozens of CPUs like this - it's nuts.

We just leave them in the cupboard looking pretty.

I used to have an AMD Thunderbird as a keyring. It didn't last long as a computer (AMD, natch).

    Re: Pentium 4 won't die

Unfortunately socket 478 is really going a bit past it's age of use, socket 775 is still viable because of the combination of older parts on the 478 motherboards compared to socket 775, at the time it wasn't a big difference, esp the early socket 775, but as time have moved on the slower systems show and combine esp compared to later socket 775 chipsets.
    DRR1 + SATA 150 + AGP vs DDR2 + SATA 300 + PCI-e + the better performing core2 cpu's and great overclocking.

PS sticking an SSD in that is really pointless, SATA 150 was really, bad it capped out around 100-110MB/sec which will actually restrict some current hard drives so an SSD is going to get nothing from it.

It's a nice bit of history and can be used in some specific rolls but as a general use pc it's really had it's day sorry.

Transfer rates will be restricted, but seek times will still be far faster on an SSD than HDD. Enough that you'd really notice the difference.

You're correct - for some reason I had them the other way around, thinking Northwood was the toasty one.

    Re: Pentium 4 won't die

Indeed, you get a SSD for access times not throughput (although that's also pretty swish too).

I think it would be quite interesting to see how "perfectly good" old computers handle modern day-to-day workloads. e.g. running an up-to-date OS and surfing Javascript heavy web-sites. The day-to-day workload of the home PC hasn't changed in terms of function for a long time. Writing documents, calculating spreadsheets, sending emails and surfing the web. If it wasn't for games, media encoding (which to be fair, this P4 has been running a transcoding media server just fine on) and professional things like virtual servers - could an old computer still be perfectly serviceable?

Don't suppose any of those are a s1156 variant?
